Reading Comics Week 1 of 2019

During the first week of the year I leaned towards reading Marvel since there weren’t a lot of Comixology releases this week. The Marvel Unlimited stuff was actually released back in June so there were plenty of issues back then so there was plenty to choose from.

One the whole I was able to get through 8 issues and for the most part they were pretty good.

From Marvel Unlimited New Releases:

  • Captain America #1 by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Leinil Francis Yu, and Gerry Alanguilan. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018. I skipped all the Captain America as a Hydra agent stuff from the last year or so and this seems to be coming in on the heels of that. Nobody really trusts Cap right now but instead, lifelong villains are being posted to government positions because they helped out against Hydra.
  • Avengers #2 by Jason Aaron, Ed McGuinness, Mark Morales, and Jay Liesten. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018. I’m still working on getting my mind around this series as we see Celestials falling from the sky and something called the Final Host coming to Earth for some kind of reckoning.
  • Infinity Countdown: Adam Warlock #1 by Gerry Duggan and Michael Allred. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018. My only knowledge of Adam Warlock comes from my reading of the original Infinity Gauntlet event so any added info I can gather about this hero is always enlightening.
  • Deadpool: Assassin #1 by Cullen Bunn and Mark Bagley and published by Marvel Comics in 2018. Blood and swords and body parts flying, this comic lived up to my expectations and I look forward to the next installment.
  • Doctor Strange #2: Sorcerer Supreme of the Galaxy, Part Two by Mark Waid and Jesús Saiz. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018. Continuing the space adventures of Doctor Strange, this was a fun read.

From Comixology:

  • CODA #1 by Simon Spurrier and Matias Bergara, published by BOOM! Studios, 2018. This was not my favorite comic of the week and since this is the first week of the year, it falls into my lowest rated of the year. The concept was good and I’ll give it a few more issues, but I really didn’t enjoy the art or the execution. Hopefully things will get better.
  • X-O Manowar #1: Soldier Part One by Matt Kindt, Tomás Giorello, and Diego Rodriguez. Published by Valiant, 2017. This looks like it could be epic and I really enjoyed the story, concept, and art. Just look at the cover and you’ll see how nicely drawn this is.

From Marvel Unlimited 1963:

  • Fantaststic Four #19 by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Dick Ayers, and Stan Goldberg.  Published by Marvel Comics, 1963. Rama Tut shows up in this issue over 50 years before the Adam Warlock issue above…pretty cool.
