Growing Pains

First Look Review of Super Sons #1

The sons of Batman and Superman join forces as Super Sons to investigate a series of break-ins at Lexcorp facilities but will Damian Wayne and Jonathan Kent be able to put aside their childish bickering long enough to accomplish anything other than getting caught?

When I Grow Up: Part 1 by Peter Tomasi and Jorge Jimenez. Published by DC Comics 2017.

The story takes place during 3 different time frames. The first is a prologue that we’re not sure when it occurs but it shows a family on what appears to be a sitcom recording set and I’m really not sure who these people are.

The second timeframe is a bit more interesting since it shows Superboy and Robin running for their lives from what appears to be duplicates of themselves.

Finally, the majority of the story focuses on two days prior to the running. In this time we see Robin enlisting Superboy’s help and the family situations each is coming from.

Robin is kinda upset that Batman won’t let him join in on his patrolling since it’s a school night, while Jonathan is praised by his parents for not using his powers. Both kids want to be helping people out and Robin figured out a way they could both team up to investigate a crime.

The series of break-ins at Lexcorp seem to be a crime that fits just right for the youngsters but first they’ve gotta get over their childish competition to get to Metropolis. And once there, they run into someone who’s not friendly to either of their families…

I’m really enjoying the art of Jorge Jimenez. I love the way Superboy’s costume doesn’t really fit and the emotion that is drawn on the faces of the heroes is wonderful.

As a first issue in the story I think this comic does a good job of laying out the interplay between Damian and Jonathan. Neither really trusts the other but to figure out what’s going on they’re gonna need to work together. And while Robin may be older than Superboy, the later has quite a bit of untapped potential that can prove to be the turning point in their little adventure.

I enjoyed the set up and characterizations of the two kids and can see this turning into a fun story as both prodigies struggle to prove themselves. During my recommended reading post I felt this was a Must Read and for my First Look Review, I rate it an A- and am looking forward to seeing where this goes.

This comic can be found on DC Universe, Comixology or at your local comic book shop.
