Recommended Reading for Week 8 of 2019

This week I spent most of my time reading comics and I enjoyed them all but one. That Anthem Book was not fun for me but the early Marvel and DC titles were all really good. I also started reading a novel that I’ll talk about more next week on d I’m finished with it.

Early Marvel

Marvel has begun featuring more stories that need multiple issues to tell and these 5 issues contain some really good fights and classic scenarios that I really enjoyed.

  • Tales of Suspense #50, #54, and #55 by Stan Lee and Don Heck. Published by Marvel Comics, 1964. Iron Man meets the Mandarin for the first time and they had so much fun they had to reprise the battle in a multi-issue contest and luckily for Tony he wins every time. That’s not to say he doesn’t get pushed to the limits of his abilities by the “most feared Oriental of all time”. In the chronology of Marvel and Iron Man this is definitely a Must Read to see where this rivalry began.
  • Fantastic Four #25 and #26 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Published by Marvel Comics, 1964. This was a titanic battle between the Thing and the Hulk. Tons of fun as the Thing showed how much courage and heart he has to keep fighting even as he’s weakening and the Hulk is getting stronger. Luckily, the Thing keeps going until the rest of the Fantastic Four and the Avengers show up to gang up on the Hulk who still manages to make things difficult for everyone. This epic fight deserves to be a Must Read whether you’re a fan of the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, the Hulk, or just early Marvel in general.

DC Universe

  • Super Sons #1 & #2 by Peter J. Tomasi and Jorge Jimenez. Published by DC Comics, 2017. This was the first Rebirth title I read on DC Universe and it was a home run! Sure, I didn’t finish the story off yet but I’m sure I’ll be finishing it this evening. I rate this team-up of young Kent and Wayne a Must Read so far and am looking forward to finishing off the series this coming week.
  • Red Hood: The Lost Days #3 – #5 by Judd Winick and Pablo Rainmondi. Published by DC Comics, 2010. This continued to be a Must Read as I really enjoyed seeing Jason Todd deal with his anger towards Batman and the Joker as he marched through his training to become a kick ass mercenary. Even with the fact that his goal is to take down Batman he still deals some crippling blows to the criminal underworld as he goes.

Comixology Unlimited

  • Punk Rock Jesus #1 – Conception by Sean Murphy. Published by Vertigo Comics, 2012. I didn’t get much beyond the first issue of this one but from what I read, this is a Must Read and I am looking forward to getting my money’s worth out of Comixology Unlimited with this one.

Top Weekly Comics

  • Wonder Twins #1It Gets Weirder by Mark Russell and Stephen Byrne. Published by DC Comics, 2019. This was a fun issue that I took a first look at here… and I’d say it’s a Read.
  • Anthem #1 There is no reason I can think of to give this issue anything other than a Skip and you can see my first look here….
