Soothing the Anger At Tragedy

Of Fires, Butt Kicking, and Schemes

It may seem trite to talk about gaming or comics, books or tv shows when such a tragedy as the destruction of Notre Dame occurred yesterday but while we’ve lost a priceless wonder that shocks all of us, people cope with loss differently and I am choosing to focus on something that comforts me. So I’m reading comics and playing games while watching the news coverage of almost 900 years of history burning to the ground.

Batman is good but he doesn’t have Superpowers

Batman #21 The Button: Part 1 by Tom King and Jason Fabok.  Published by DC Comics, 2017.

This issue kicks off The Button story arc that brings more clarity to the events that started the Rebirth era of DC Comics. When Bruce digs into the mystery of the Watchmen-like button he and Flash found in DC Universe: Rebirth #1, he’s confronted by one of the more formidable members of the speedster’s rogues gallery who proceeds to beat the snot outta the Bat.

If nothing else, this is a Must Read just to see how someone with actual super powers can unload on Batman.

Thor visits American Gods

The latest episode (season 2, episode 6) of American Gods, Donar the Great tells us of the recent past and how a god can die without the possibility of coming back to life. Donar, the namesake of the episode is actually Thor using a Germanic version of the god of thunder’s name and he features prominently in this cabaret infused tale. It’s really a well woven story that not only gives background to Wednesday but also provides the reason Odin’s spear is broken. Apparently the last time Odin tried to trick Thor into doing his will they had a fight where Thor smashed through the spear with his hammer.

I easily give this episode a Must Watch as it provides insight into Odin and his history, features some nicely choreographed cabaret, tells us that gods that commit suicide can’t recover, and clues Shadow in on the fact that Odin’s schemes don’t always work out for everyone involved.

Give it a watch if you’re into the show or Neil Gaiman and start up from the first season if your into fables, gods, fantasy, or just like well told stories and haven’t jumped on board yet.

It’s a Wrap

As I said at the start I’m deeply saddened by the tragedy in Paris and certainly hope that they were able to save some of the priceless items from the fire. I also pray they’ll be able to use all the images and documents that have been generated about the cathedral to rebuild its glory for future generations to see.

In the meantime, reading about Batman getting his butt kicked and watching the schemes of the Allfather reap chaos brings me comfort and helps me get past the fact that I’m really pissed off people let a fire start in such an historic monument.

I pray this will not happen anywhere else for another 900 years.
