Reading From Week 22 of 2019

This week, I read through a bunch of the comics I laid out in my Pull List for week 21 but I didn’t finish them off…more fodder for my always growing backlog. Fortunately, I enjoyed all the issues I read and I liked the Venom story so well I finished off the whole arc and was pleased with how well Donny Cates developed the tale. I also loved The Goon but there were only 2 issues I could read of that title. I’m certainly anticipating more from Eric Powell.

I’m already working on getting through the items on this week’s pull list so hopefully I’ll be able to get through everything but we’ll see…

  • The Goon #1 A Ragged Return to Lonely Street by Eric Powell and Rachel Cohen. Published by Albatross Funny Books, 2019.
A fun jump into a well developed world that makes me want to go back to read the past 20 years of the title.
  • The Goon #2 The Villainy of Vinnie Nosferatu by Eric Powell and Rachel Cohen. Published by Albatross Funny Books, 2019.
This time around, the Goon and Franky take on Vinnie Nosferatu and his gang who’ve been extorting the business owners of the town.
  • Clue: Candlestick #1 by Dash Shaw, Published by IDW Publishing, 2019.
This was pretty good. I liked the art and the mystery makes this a fun read.
  • Ms. Marvel #36 Silk Road by G. Willow Wilson, Nico Leon, and Ian Herring. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018.
This one-shot takes a fun dive into the past where we see Kamala and Bruno in the roles of their ancestors as they travel along the Silk-Road in medieval times. It was pretty fun.
  • Justice League: No Justice #2 by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Francis Manapul, and Marcus To. Published by DC Comics, 2018.
This 2nd part (of 4) continues the story arc where Brainiac gathered Earth’s heroes to fight against the Omega Titans and the teams he placed everyone in are having growing pains in this issue.
  • Green Lanterns #47 Ghosts of the Past: Long Road Home by Tim Seeley, V. Ken Marion, Sandy Flores, Dinei Ribeiro, and Davce Sharpe.Published by DC Comics, 2018.
This finale of the Ghosts of the Past story arc and Tim Seeley’s run on the title was a pretty good look at Jessica Cruz and how she relates to the other superheroes particularly fellow lantern Simon Baz. This was not necessarily a good spot to jump into the story.
  • Daughters of the Dragon #1 by Jed Mackay, Travel Foreman, Jordan Gibson, and Ferran Delgado. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018.
This new title features two kick-ass ladies who compliment each other well, the gun toting, Misty Knight, and the samurai, Coleen Wing who’ve taken a trip to California for this issue.
  • Avengers #57 Behold the Vision! by Roy Thomas, John Buscema, George Klein, Sam Rosen, and Stan Lee. Published by Marvel Comics, 1968.
The Vision makes his first appearance in this issue as he was created by Ultron to destroy the Avengers.
  • Venom #2 by Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, and Frank Martin. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018.
As an ‘oil covered dragon’ terrorizes Manhattan, Eddie learns more about the platoon of super soldiers who were the first to be infected with the ancient symbiote.
  • Venom #3 by Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, and Frank Martin. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018.
In this issue, Spider-Man and Venom team up against Knull, the god of the symbiotes, and things don’t look too good for them.
  • Venom #4 by Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, and Frank Martin. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018.
We get a lesson on the origin of the Knull – the symbiote god-host, who is working to free himself from the symbiote Klyntar prison. Once free he plans to claim his vengeance on Earth.
  • Venom #5 by Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, and Frank Martin. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018.
Spider-Man and Venom escaped from Knull in the last issue and here we see Eddie question Rex Strickland about Grendel and their role in the symbiote god’s plans.
  • Venom #6 by Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, and Frank Martin. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018.
Did Venom, Eddie, and Rex just fight a god? This was a great conclusion to the first arc of the Venom title by Donny Cates.

These comics can be found on Marvel Unlimited, DC Universe, Comixology or at your local comic book shop.
