The God Butcher, Part Five of Five: Dream of a Godless Age
This may be the fifth part of a five part story but I have to say I’m glad this is really just the beginning. In this final installment of Jason Aaron’s first story arc, we see battles raging from 14 billion years in the past to the distant future where Asgard is in ruins.

Gorr, the God Butcher is continuing his rampage across the heavens and he even heads to the beginnings of the gods themselves to slay an elder god. But this issue is more than just slaughter. We learn quite a bit about Gorr’s motives and philosophy as we see the young Thor rescued from captivity by his loyal Vikings.

We also see the current day Thor chasing the Butcher across time and space to Chronux where Gorr kills all but one of the Time Gods and uses the Time Pool to travel to the far future. In an attempt to put an end to the killings, Thor jumps after Gorr and shows up in…Asgard. But this is an Asgard that has seen better days for somehow Thor arrives 900 years after the Butcher began his pillaging of Thor’s home. Here an aged Thor greets his younger self and perhaps between the two of them they can put an end to the carnage.

Once again, this issue is chock full of story with action on every page. This issue might have my favorite art of the series so far as Ribic does a tremendous job depicting the battles and locations as Thor hunts down the Butcher.

As I mentioned at the start, this is just the beginning since we see that as Gorr strives for his endgame, the reader is headed back to his origins in the next issue. And I for one, will not miss that issue.

Verdict

Rated a Must Read

I rate this issue a definite Must Read and while I haven’t read much Thor other than his early Stan Lee, Journey Into Mystery issues, I feel this series is spoiling me with top notch story and beautiful art..
