Today is all about the Home Run Derby…

Every year I always look forward to seeing how many home runs people can smack in the derby. In my view, it’s not really about who wins, it’s more about the fun and imagination that it sparks.

Kids, of course, love it! And from my understanding, this year, if the All-Star Game completes 9 innings in a tie, they’re gonna have another derby to see who wins. I think that’s a reasonable solution.

In any case, congratulations to Juan Soto for smacking the most HRs. He was truly impressive, and I hope that he is able to keep his head on right during the second half. One thing that always worries me about players who participate in the Home Run Derby is that they seem to fall off after the All-Star Game. It’s happened to Trout, it’s happened to Ohtani.

The other player I was impressed with yesterday was Alberto Pujols. He smacked more home runs in the derby than he did for the last 5 years with the Angels. Maybe with the DH, he can play another few years, but I will always remember him as a failed promise.
