Don’t Tell Me How to Think

Aparently the race of the character portrayed on the the title screen of Battlefield 1 has created some controversy.  I’m kinda confused.  It’s not like race or skin color makes any difference in the game – you don’t get any kind of special abilities or penalties for the different characters.  I dont even think there’s much of a difference among the various classes of scout, assault, support, or medic except that they have a couple of distinct abilities they can perform.

And honestly, playing the multiplayer mode mostly, I don’t even know what the race of the character I play is.  It’s just a character I play…mostly scout, but sometimes medic or whatever.  No difference to me – its not a “this race” medic or “that race” scout – I dont take on a different persona to play the different classes or even think about skin color or if the character is circumsized, but I guess some people insist on making a big deal about these things.  (Maybe I’m doing things wrong since I’m usually pretty low on the scoreboard)

If someone wants to make a big deal, fine, but I spend more of my attention trying to keep my character alive and taking objectives.  I am getting better at staying alive – I actually scored positive kill-death ratios for 2 matches in a row for the first time the other night and I was very pleased.

My current issue is that I tend to play a scout and end up pretty far from the front line.  This doesnt give me a bunch of opportunities to take objectives – I don’t capture many flags, but I’m working on it.

Most of the time, I’m sighting the enemy through my scope and trying to get the big picture.  This usually lets me see things like these blimps being destroyed – this is probably one of my favorite parts of Battlefield 1.

I enjoy playing video games as a break from the day-to-day work that I do.  I use them to relax and to escape from crap like the stupid election ads and the terrorism news that seemed to be everywhere this year.  If someone wants to make a big deal about some minuscule part of a game that I’m playing, that’s great for them, just dont tell me how I’m supposed to think.

  1. *cough* Zeppelin *cough*

    or even Dirigible.

But not a blimp. Blimps don’t have the support framework. 😉

I’m with you on race not mattering in mmo’s. Who cares what color skin the human has when there’s an orc over there? Or a bipedal rat? Or a tiger? Or a frog?

Even in the more “real world-ish” games, there’s no bonus nor penalty for the avatar’s skin color. Who cares?

    • I suppose having grown up in Southern California, I’ve seen the Goodyear Blimp too many times to get blimp outta my head when I see a similar ship…Oh the Humanity!!!
