Six Degrees of 2017 – Superior Realities

This is an installment of my Six Degrees 2017 series in which I take a look at the wonderful blogs that surround Beyond Tannhauser Gate. The blogosphere is large but there are so many friends to be found within Six Degrees.

Superior Realities

Superior Realities has been a site I’ve frequented for many years. The blog, run by Tyler F.M. Edwards, always seems to have interesting posts about various games and topics I’ve found well written and enlightening. Covering many games I either play or am interested in and I’m happy to have the site within the first degree of Beyond Tannhauser Gate.

Looking back to the introductory post, it seems Mr. Edwards has been at this blogging thing about a year longer than I have, but he seems so much better at it than I. And in covering the community, it’s nice to see that his interests tend to coincide with mine quite a bit.

In his most recent post StarCraft: 3.13 and Fenix Impressions, Tyler talks about the recent update to Starcraft and some of the Protoss and co-op changes. I find the post enlightening about the game and intriguing in that it makes me want to play the game I’ve let sit on my hard drive for the last couple years.

His Review: The Warcraft Chronicle, Volume Two post inspires me to pass on spending my time with the latest Warcraft lore. From the sound of it Blizzard is doing something I hate most – laying down a retcon of classic history. I get really tired of large properties changing things after they become successful – leave history alone please.

But Superior Realities is not just about Blizzard titles, the site covers so much more like in the post On Pet Classes that covers a bunch of games from Dungeon Seige to Dragon Age and SWTOR to ESO. I happen to fall into the love pet class category and I think Tyler’s analysis of pet classes in MMOs vs single-player RPGs is a wonderful topic.

Further, beyond gaming, the blog covers movies and TV and by explaining his rating scale in the post Explaining my Review Scores Tyler gives a good insight into his thought process when evaluating all kinds of stuff. I particularly like that he uses Defiance and Continuum episodes as examples of various numeric ratings – I enjoyed many of those shows myself but I prefer letter grades to numbers…I like to think back to the old school days.

Finally, the last post on the site I looked at for this 6° post covered The Secret World – Judging the Secret World’s Future by the Past and from what it’s conclusions are, I am really sad. When I heard about Secret World Legends I was kinda excited but cautious because I really liked TSW and wanted it to continue if not thrive. From the research Mr. Edwards has done, I worry for both TSW and SWL. The game and the concepts and the environment all deserve opportunities and I really feel TSW was never really given a chance to do well. A bad launch and other games starting up at the same time hurt things from the get-go, so I truly hope SWL is a new chance.

From these few posts, you can see the breadth and depth of the coverage on Superior Realities. I’ve enjoyed reading the posts there for years and am glad to place them in my 1st Degree of sites.
