Planned Books for May 2018

For reading in the month of May, I actually have a carry over from the previous month. I’ve not done this before but in April I didn’t finish everything I wanted to and I didn’t want to put the book aside. Carrying it over to May might make the month an bit more crowded but since I’m just figuring out my reading list now, I can accommodate.

Book Club Books

The book I didn’t finish in April was suggested by the Science Fiction and Fantasy book club and while I didn’t finish it, I plan on it. Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny is a good book but it was hard to find a method to read/listen to the novel. It turns out YouTube has a couple of different audio versions so I’m gonna go for that as opposed to my usual Audible.com version. I’m entering the month about halfway through so I figure it’ll be easy to finish off the first week.

  • Nimona! by Noelle Stevenson
This is actually a graphic novel that the Science Fiction and Fantasy club is taking a look at this month. Sure, I won’t be able to listen to the story but I enjoy looking at pictures, so I’m excited about this one. It’s also a book that I’ve heard good things about from both book people and comics people.
  • Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
I actually read this book (and the whole series) a long time ago, as in at least a decade before the movie came out. I enjoyed it back then and I am looking forward to seeing how it holds up after all these years.
  • Night’s Master by Tanith Lee
I know next to nothing about this selection from Sword and Laser but they have been picking some good ones lately.
  • If I Die Tonight by Alison Gaylin
I love books from Mysterious Galaxy since they often make suggestions that I would never have read without them. This one falls in that category as I am not one to pick up psychological suspense novels on my own, but I’m looking forward to this.

Science and History Books

  • A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking
With the recent passing of this intellectual giant it’s about time I read his seminal work. I’ve had this in my library for years but never got around to reading it. I’m hoping this will be a nice follow up to The Elegant Universe which I read last month.
  • Winter is Coming: Why Vladimir Putin and the Enemies of the West Must Be Stopped by Gary Kasparov
A few months ago the History Book Club suggested a book on North Korea and look at how things have changed since I read that back in November. Now they’re looking at Russia and I wonder how things may change with international relations with that country in the next few months. I actually minored in Russian History back in my college days so this should be interesting.

My Book Projects

  • Foundation and Empire by Isaac Asimov
The Foundation survived in first few trials in the last installment but this book promises to throw even bigger problems at the psychohistorians. This is the 12th of 15 Asimov novels in my plan and I’m getting anxious to reach the end. So far, the whole thing has been really good.
  • Servant of the Empire by Raymond E. Feist and Janny Wurts
I’m gonna have to figure out how many books are in this project but this is the 2nd of 3 in the 2nd trilogy. I really enjoyed the previous novel in the Empire trilogy and am looking forward to learning more about the metal-less world of Kelewan
