First Look at Green Arrow #1

As we saw in the Rebirth issue, Oliver Queen and Dinah Drake are Green Arrow and Black Canary and they’re on a mission to track down and save the homeless of Seattle from a group calling themselves the Underground Men.

The Undecided: Emiko

My Reading:

Stopping the Underground Men at the Seattle Docks doesn’t prove to be much of an issue for the heroes but when they see that the shipping containers being used for the bad guy’s plans are owned by Queen Industries, Oliver has some investigating to do. How is his company involved with these human traffickers?

After a night together, Oliver and Dinah share breakfast with Emi before Queen feels compelled to show Drake all the wonderful things he does with his wealth…children’s hospitals, homeless shelters, baseball fields, and protective shelters all supported by Queen Industries. He may be big business but he does what he can to help the community. Which makes he feel even worse that his shipping containers were being used for plans of the Underground Men so Ollie was determined to find out what was going on.

Making an appearance at the office he surprises everyone and that sets off warning alarms for someone Ollie thought he could trust. Cyrus Broderick who basically runs the company for Oliver shows some serious nervousness as Ollie tells him about how he’s digging into the company finances and we soon learn why…Broderick is the man behind the mask that was controlling the Underground Men’s auction.

Obviously this can’t be good, but the more immediate problem for Queen is that he’s attacked as he gets home by Shado. He fights her off for the most part until Emiko shows up and completely surprises Ollie by shooting him instead of Shado. This can’t be good for Green Arrow.

What did I learn:

  • Oliver feels that he has to make up for the fact that he has lotsa money by trying to help as many less fortunate people as he can.
  • Oliver and Emi are siblings.
  • Oliver had some kind of relationship with Shado in the past.
  • Oliver obviously doesn’t pay much attention to his business dealings since Cyrus was able to build a nefarious organization within his company without any notice.
  • Emiko is Shado’s daughter

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed this issue more than the Rebirth one mostly because it was not as obnoxious about the social justice warrior shtick. I get the idea that Ollie is a good guy even though he has money but this issue is more about the positive things he does with that money rather than the plight of the downtrodden as I felt in the Rebirth issue. This issue also does a good job of laying out the path for the future of the storyline. I can clearly see that the Underground Men are related to more than just the homeless in Seattle and the fact that all of these illegal dealings are tied to Queen Industries makes it personal for Oliver.

I’m still a bit clueless as to why Dinah is hanging around Seattle but then there may have been something going on between the two heroes that I just don’t know about. It really doesn’t matter though, the fact that she’s around should help Ollie with this crazy situation and may save him from the fact that Emiko and Shado are working together and took him out of action already here in issue 1.

My Rating: B-
