First Complete Game and Shutout of the Season

It took 116 pitches, one of the highest of the season, but Andrew Heaney threw the team’s first complete game and shutout of the season on his 27th birthday no less.

Heaney Threw A Gem

While he hit the first batter of the game, Heaney quickly settled down and won what turned out to be a great pitchers duel. The offense tried to help out with 7 hits but Brad Keller pitched well for KC as well. Andrew was just a bit better.

This had to have been one of his best games in his career as he only allowed a walk and a single in addition to the hit batsman. He also picked up 4 strike outs by throwing a total of 81 strikes out of the 116 pitches he threw.

Justin Upton tried to help by going 3 for 3 but his 3 singles didn’t produce much and it was up to a strange pick off play to produce the only run of the game. With Chris Young on third and Michael Hermosillo on first, KC catcher Salvador Perez threw to 2nd base to catch Hermosillo stealing but he was only halfway there. Hermosillo played it smart and headed back to 1st base leaving Young time to score Before he was tagged out.

That was it. No more scoring. No RBIs. Just that one run by smart base running.

So Andrew Heaney gets my Player of the Game of course and Chris Young and Michael Hermosillo get lotsa kudos.

The one worry of the game though is that Andrelton Simmons left early with a sprained ankle. Hopefully it won’t amount to much but it worries me since he’s been one of the few consistent bats for the Angels all season.

Today Shohei Ohtani (4-1 3.18 ERA) faces off against Ian Kennedy (1-6 6.08 ERA) to close the 3 game series.
