Reading Comics week 47 of 2018

This was an interesting week of comic reading for me. From travels through the realms of death to neo-nazis, from symbiotes to the murder of 18 billion people, this was a week of expanding my horizons in comics. I continued to work on my Marvel 1963 project and take a look at the high rated Marvel Unlimited weekly releases, but I also took a peek as some well regarded new comics on Comixology. One things I noticed this week was that most of the titles I picked up had a lot to do with death. People getting blown up, people having terminal illness, a weatherman accused of killing 18 billion people, heroes that go missing, and a living bomb…a lot of death and loss. But for the most part, these issues that I read were pretty good so here are my highlights.

  • The Weatherman #1 by Jody LeHeup, Nathan Fox, and Dave Stewart. Published by Image Comics, 2018 – This comic cruised along following a day in the life of a weatherman on the Earth colony of Mars where the population is remembering the day, seven years ago, when 18 billion people on Earth died. I can’t wait to read the next issue and luckily, it’s already here since I started reading the series late.
  • X-Men: Red by Tom Taylor, Mahmud Asrar, and Ive Svorcina. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018 – Jean Grey is back and she’s looking to make the world a safer place for Mutant-kind, the only problem is that not all mutants are on board with her plan.
  • American Carnage #1 by Bryan Hill and Leandro Fernandez. Published by Vertigo, 2018 – A white FBI agent gets lynched in LA and a second, African-American agent, nearly gets blown up by Neo-Nazis and I’m thinking whoa! what’s going on in this comic? With this introduction and title, this looks like it could be pretty brutal but it also looks like it could be interesting.
  • Project Superpowers Vol 2.#0 by Rob Williams and Sergio Davilla. Published by Dynamite Comics, 2018 – Magical hero Green Lama is contacted by The Death Defying Devil and shown the past and the future and how the time for heroes has come again. Will they be able to get the team back together and will The Flag join them to try to save the world?
  • Euthanauts #1, Ground Control by Tini Howard and Nick Robles. Published by Black Crown and IDW Comics 2018 – I was a bit skeptical about this title based on the name but then it also sounded interesting and when I read it I was rewarded for my time. A terminal cancer patient, funeral home employees, and some really cool visuals make this an enjoyable introduction to what looks like it could be a really good series.
  • Venom #1 by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018 – When I saw that there was a new Venom title I had to take a peek. He’s been a favorite anti-hero of mine for a long time and I’m pleased to say that I enjoyed this issue as it took a dive into some of the background of the Symbiote. I’m excited to see where this title goes.
