Death and Resurrection

The Gauntlet Could Bring Back CoH

I’m not sure that’s the best title for a post around Easter that has nothing to do with Easter so I figured I’d at least mention the religious holiday celebrated my myself and many around the world.

Instead, of Christ dying for our sins and rising from the dead, I am writing today about Infinity Gauntlet #1 which includes Thanos’ pledge to kill half the beings in the universe and the possibility, once again, that City of Heroes might come back from the dustbin of history.

The End is Coming

Infinity Gauntlet #1 by Jim Starlin and George Perez.  Published by Marvel Comics, 1991.

This issue is the beginning of the classic event and it focuses on the Mad Titan Thanos and his use of the Infinity Gauntlet. Vowing to do anything for his love, Thanos pledges to kill half of all beings in the universe but claims he needs the unlimited power of the gauntlet to effect that promise. With nothing else pleasing his beloved Mistress Death, Thanos snaps his fingers and things die…half of all humans including Hawkeye and Doctor Strange’s assistant Wong, half of all animals, and half the Skrull empire. Nowhere is safe from the power of the Infinity Gauntlet as Thanos wields it but Silver Surfer has raced to Earth to try to enlist Doctor Strange and the heroes of Earth to save the universe. The event is pretty cool and with Avengers: Endgame right around the corner, I give this a definitive Read rating.

What’s the deal with City of Heroes news?

Six and a half years ago I got this message…

City of Heroes had shut down and the game that started my love of MMOs was gone.

Even with the game shut down it has remained in the news periodically as people remember it fondly and some work on successors.

Now it turns out there may have been a hidden server that kept the game alive for all these years but only for a select few. I’m not sure about all the details but listening to the MassivelyOP podcast and reading a few articles about the whole thing actually gives me hope.

While some see it as a betrayal since they were never invited to participate in the private server, I see it as a silver lining. If there has been a server that has been running based on code that is now being released all over the place, then there is a good possibility that people will work to bring CoH back to life.

I’d love that and support that. Screw the people who are upset they weren’t invited into the private server, they have no special justification that they should have been told about anything. Nowhere was it ever written that everything had to be announced to the public, I’m just glad the people involved decided to provide the code to the public now. That means lots of eyeballs will be looking at it and trying to figure out how to make it work for a large group of people and THAT is what is important.

Let’s try to resurrect a game we all still love and leave the anger and hate to other gaming communities.

It’s a Wrap

I’d love to see City of Heroes come back and maybe this time there will finally be a rebirth. There really hasn’t been a successful superhero game since it died but whenever I hear about it coming back I start to think about reinstalling Champions Online (which maybe I’ll do now…again). I enjoyed that game as well, but not nearly as much as CoH. And while the potential rebirth of a beloved game is a possibility, I know some of the heroes who died in Avengers: Infinity War are most likely gonna come back in Endgame. As part of my preparation for Endgame I’m reading Infinity Gauntlet to get into the mood of Thanos and his Mad Titan antics.
