My Reading:

Hours ago Wolverine fought on the field of battle against his friends and family. He sided with the Avengers in the battle of Utopia and now that he was back at the Jean Grey School, he confided his distress to Kitty Pryde. He did not like being called a traitor.

And Cyclops’ appearance at the school could only make matters worse. Logan of course doesn’t want to talk about anything with Cyclops but Scott demands to know if Wolverine is an Avenger or an X-Man. He exclaims that he’s determined to make the world a better place for future generations of mutants even if he won’t make it there himself. Wolverine on the other hand insists Scott just wants the Phoenix as a weapon of mass destruction so that world powers have to respect the X-Men.

Neither one looks like they’re gonna change their mind soon.

Meanwhile things continue to happen at the school…Genesis finds out that Apocalypse is a super villian and even though classmates call him “kid Apocalypse” he doesn’t want to be a villain but rather wants to do good.

Angel, in a separate scene, tries to fly up to heaven, figuring that if he is in fact an Angel, he shouldn’t have any trouble getting there…he doesn’t make it. And it’s a good thing Genesis is contemplating who he is because he just happens to be nearby when Angel comes crashing down from the sky. He catches Angel and when asked, Angel lies and tells Genesis that he sees only goodness in him.

As Cyclops, Emma, and Magik take off, other X-Men – Iceman and Rachel Grey for instance begin to express their sympathies with the mutant cause. While Scott may not have convinced Logan to join his X-Men, others may soon provide him assistance.

Oh yeah, and almost as an after thought, the Shi’ar Death Commandos show up on Earth to kill the Phoenix.

What did I learn:

  • Warren Worthington’s memories and personality are no longer alive in Angel.
  • Logan and Scott really don’t like each other.

My Thoughts:

The chronological positioning of this issue is a bit strange since in the last issue I read for AvX, Captain America was throwing Logan outta a quinjet. While here, Wolverine turns his back on the X-Men and Cyclops but as we saw, Steve Rogers doesn’t want Logan messing up the Avengers plans. He really is being set on a solo course in this conflict.

Aside from the questions Wolverine has to deal with I think the identity crises of Genesis and Angel are pretty interesting. One is figuring out who he really is…the son (or reincarnation) of an evil super villain while the other is discovering that he’s not who or what he thought he was. The fact that Apocalypse was the cause of Warren Worthington’s mind wipe is not known to either party and actually, I’m not really sure of it either…it’s just strongly hinted at so far.

My Rating: B
