Fitness, Jack Ryan, and League

Daily Ramble 27: Fitness, Jack Ryan, and League

It’s been a while since I’ve rambled on about what I’ve been doing lately. Television shows have been watched, comics have been read, games have been played and all without me making a peep about them. Today I’m going to try to start a string of posts that resolve that issue and get me back into regular daily rambling.

Starting to Get Fit Again

The first thing that I wanted to ramble about today is that I finally made the decision that I want to get back into shape. This, I know is going to be a long process because while I’m not out of shape completely, I’m certainly not very fit. I’ve spent most of my days at work sitting or standing at my desk though I do go out and get my 10 K steps each day. My main concern comes on the weekends where I’m not going out and doing a lot of walking around or any fitness activities. That needs to stop if I’m gonna improve my fitness. I’ve decided that I am going to start to work towards another half marathon or marathon race. Certainly it’s not a race for me other than the fact that it’s an organized running event but it stands as a goalpost.

So with this long weekend I decided to take a baby step and run down to the end of our stree, go to the little baseball field there, and do some push-ups, jumping jacks, squats, etc. Once I got that done I would then go for a short 1 mile very slow run to get my blood pumping and get my muscles moving again. I’m pretty sure that is going to be the extent of my routine for the next couple weeks. I don’t want to push myself too hard and injure myself or cause myself to stop working out because I’m too sore. I know myself pretty well and that’s a likely occurrence if I push too hard.

I figure all of that will take half hour or less and will not cause me too much pain and suffering the next day. And if I can do that for two weeks in a row consistently then I’ll be in a much better position to start any type of long-term training plan.

Tired of ELO Hell

Ok, well I rambled on quite a bit about my fitness ideas so the rest is going to be shorter but I’ll cover more in future posts like usual.

In gaming I making another determination – to cut back on the amount of League of Legends I’m playing because I am fairly certain that it is next to impossible to advance very far as a support player. I’ve tried multiple different support champions and tried roaming, tried healing, tried playing aggressive, and tried tanking and none of them seem to give me a consistent winning combination. Support seems to be the most dependent role. If there’s a bad ADC or a bad mid laner or a bad jungler, Support really suffers in that while they can make a difference it’s usually not enough to cause a win. It really seems that as a support I can extend the game – enabling my teammates to finally come around and do their job that they signed up for in the role that they chose, but more often than not it’s simply extend the game until they once again throw. Anyway I’ve got to cut back on playing that game because it frustrates the hell out of me and I’m not getting much out of it any longer.

Couple of New Shows

Wow! I didn’t expect to go on a rant like that but it is what it is.

The final piece of rambling I wanted to do was about some shows I’ve been watching.
The other day I watched the first couple of episodes of Jack Ryan on Amazon Prime and it impressed me. Back in the day I read at least half a dozen Tom Clancy novels and was a huge fan. I enjoyed the books, I enjoyed the movies, and I was really looking forward to see what this Jack Ryan TV show was going to be all about. So far it looks like they’ve done a pretty good job of bringing it up to current times. And for the most part it feels kind a like the episodes of 24, which in my book is a good thing. In any case, I’m really enjoying the show and will be continuing the rest of the season.

The other show that I’m really enjoying lately has been Castle Rock. This Stephen King vehicle coupled with JJ Abrams is very interesting and it actually drove me to re-watch The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile over the past few weeks. When you go back and look at all the books, television shows, and movies that Stephen King has been involved in, it’s pretty amazing. He is all over the place. And this Castle Rock television series seems to be tied into quite a few of the different properties. There are references to Kujo, and Carrie, and the entire show centers around a seemingly evil character who actually is the same actor who played Pennywise in the most recent incarnation of It. With events happening all over Maine and particularly in the Shawshank prison it definitely feels like Stephen King had his hands all over this. I am enjoying it and even though it’s been creepy at times, I’ve been able to get through about half the season so far and it’s been a lot of fun.

So the bottom line is if you’re looking for a new show to watch or even to just give a chance to, I’d highly recommend either Castl Rock or Jack Ryan. Both of them are pretty good so far.

  1. Was wondering if the Jack Ryan series was going to be any good. Not sold at all on John Krasinsky as the lead. But hopefully he surprises.
I’ve taken a turn for more physical fitness in my life lately. Although it sounds pretty generic, the app ‘Home Workout’ is pretty good for giving a good daily workout regimen which requires no weights – just a workout mat. I have both the iOS and Android version and prefer the iOS one – just less ads and seems to have better functionality. But it’s a free app either way. Good health to you!

    • It is kinda funny seeing Jim interrogating terrorists. I keep expecting him to look into the camera.
