Reading From Week 24 Of 2019

This week, I got rolling with Y: The Last Man volume 4 and kept things moving pretty well. I wound up tackling about 20 comics this week if I count Y for the 6 issues that it represents so I feel pretty good, almost 3 a day.

I also kicked off my rereading of Watchmen and am enjoying it as much as I did the last time I read through it. Beyond that, I mixed things up with some old and new marvel and a few good DC issues for both Batman and Superman.

The only slow point was Thor #162 which was kinda a letdown from the fight between Thor and Galactus in #161.

Finally, I finished off Persepolis Rising, the 7th installment in the Expanse series by James S. A. Corey and I loved it. This has been a great series and I’m sad I’m almost done with all the printed books. My understanding is that there is gonna be a ninth installment but only 8 are published so far.

Anyway, here you go…

  • Man of Steel #1 by Brian Michael Bendis, Ivan Reis, Joe Prada, and Jay Fabok. Published by DC Comics, 2018.
Interesting things abound in this kickoff of the Man of Steel as, in the present, an arsonist is on the loose in Metropolis and in the past, a petition is submitted suggesting that Krypton’s expansionist tendencies should be terminated with extreme prejudice.
  • Immortal Hulk #4
  • Thumbs #1 by Sean Lewis and Hayden Sherman. Published by Image Comics, 2019.
The tech savvy teenagers of Thumbs take on a regressive and repressive government that denies freedom to those who’ve come to rely on their devices rather than their parents. Along with an interesting story, the bright pink and grey of the images are truly captivating.
  • West Coast Avengers #3
  • Uncanny X-Men #60 by Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, and Tom Palmer. Published by Marvel Comics, 1969.
This issue covers the origin of Sauron and I’d have to say it’s a great read. With plenty of X-Men action and a flashback to a Pteranodon attack the art in this issue is a lot of fun too.
  • Y: The Last Man vol 4 by Brian K. Vaughan, Pia Guerra, and Jose Marzan. Published by Vertigo Comics, 2004.
Yorrick is still the last man on Earth but in this volume he faces a drug induced nightmare, a sadistic member of the Culper Circle and a bunch of Arizona anti-government rebels.
  • Justice League #4
  • Batman: Last Knight on Earth #1 by Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, and Jonathan Glapion. Published by DC Comics, 2019.
Tracking a series of crimes over the course of a year leads Batman back to the scene of his parent’s shooting where something goes wrong and he wakes up in Arkham Asylum as a young Bruce Wayne who’s never been Batman.
  • Star Trek: Year 5 #2
  • Flash #46 Road to Flash War by Joshua Williamson, Scott Rolins, and Luis Guerrero. Published by DC Comics, 2018.
Wally West is not having a good day. He’s starting to lose it mentally and Barry is only able to help so much.
  • Flash #47 Flash War: Part One by Joshua Williamson and Howard Porter. Published by DC Comics, 2018.
Renegades or rather some of the Rogues Gallery show up from the future and want to bring Iris West to the future to stand trial for killing Eobard Thawne.
  • Uncanny X-Men #61
  • Thor #161 Shall a God Prevail? by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Published by Marvel Comics, 1969.
Thor faces Galactus, who will come through victorious?
  • Thor #162
  • Watchmen #1 by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Published by DC Comics, 1986.
The opening salvo in one of the best graphic novel stories ever. A Comedian is dead and the only person who seems to care is the psychotic vigilante, Rorschach.

These comics can be found on Marvel Unlimited, DC Universe, Comixology or at your local comic book shop.
