My Reading List From Week 27 of 2019

I got through 21 comics this week and a chapter of The Rook and I think I might be finally putting a dent in my backlog. There’s just so much cool stuff I’d like to read. This week saw more gods fighting each other and even the death of not just one, but 2 Highfathers. Never fear though, a new New god will be born soon to Big Barda and Mister Miracle. Beyond the gods, the fledgling Green Lanterns learn to work together while the female members of the Avengers decide it’s time to exert their female power. Magneto and Namor team-up and Spidey has to work hard to put down Doctor Octopus and in the process has to deal with the death of Captain Stacy. It was a good week of comics and I decided to put them in a general order of how much I enjoyed each one…Sorry Silver Surfer, not only did your first solo title end but I didn’t really like the 3 issues I read.

In any case, here are the issues I read this week ordered by my enjoyment.

  1. Amazing Spider-Man #90
And Death Shall Come! Whoa! I did not see that coming…Such an epic battle between Spidey and Doc Ock and such tragic results. This issue seems like it’ll have a lasting impact.
  2. Amazing Spider-Man #89
Doc Ock Lives! If you were wondering about the title, in the last issue, it seemed Doc Ock blew up in a plane…obviously he didn’t die and he’s out to get Spidey.
  3. Mister Miracle #4
Orion puts Mister Miracle on trial…one in which he is the Accuser, the Defender, and the Judge. I’m sure you can figure the outcome.
  4. Mister Miracle #6
I just love how Big Barda and Mister Miracle chat about the most mundane things while kicking butt, but in this issue we find out why Barda wants a new bedroom and Scott is in for surprises both good and bad.
  5. Mister Miracle #5
Condemned to death by Orion, Mister Miracle and Big Barda spend their last day on Earth together.
  6. Green Lanterns #3
Rage Planet Part 3 sees Simon Baz tap into his own experiences to ‘cure’ Bleez of her rage and for a brief time, she breaks free of being a Red Lantern. Jessica shows up, however, and messes everything up and we see her leaning towards rage against her partner.
  7. Mister Miracle #3
Fighting on the side of the Highfather Orion, Mister Miracle and Big Barda defeat Granny Goodness, but at what cost?
  8. Green Lanterns #4
Rage Planet Part 4 Jessica has been overcome by rage and attacks Simon as his ring starts running outta juice. Somehow though, he’s able to encourage her willpower and she summons their battery to recharge them both, building strength to their partnership that looks like it’s gonna be tested in the next issue.
  9. Fantastic Four #102
The Strength of the Sub-Mariner Magneto and Namor team up to take on the Fantastic Four.
  10. Man of Steel #2
Man of Steel Part 2 There are so many different parts to this issue, it’s hard to describe as we see Superman take down the Toyman, gossip swirling around what’s up with Lois and Clark, Guardians sitting back to watch Krypton explode, something going on in the Vega system, and other stuff that I am not too sure how to explain. I like the art but I’m not too keen on the coherence of the story – hopefully the threads will be wound tighter in future issues.
  11. Fantastic Four #104
Our World — Enslaved! Namor and the Fantastic Four take down Magneto.
  12. Silver Surfer #16
In the Hands of…Mephisto! Mephisto kidnaps the love of the Surfer’s life, Shalla Bal, and forces the cosmic rider to swear obedience to the dark lord to save her life. What plans can Mephisto have for the Silver Surfer?
  13. Fantastic Four #103
At War With Atlantis! Namor finds out that Magneto has betrayed him into attacking the Fantastic Four.
  14. Iron Man #21
The Replacement Tony Stark decides its time to pass the Iron Man armor on to another and chooses African American prize fighter Eddie March as the new hero. Unbeknownst to Tony though, Eddie has a blood clot in his brain that threatens his life when he takes on the new Crimson Dynamo.
  15. Green Lanterns #6
Rage Planet Part 6 it looks like the Lanterns have pulled together to win the battle against Atrocitus and the Red Lanterns but there are warning signs on the horizon as it looks like the Red Kitty might have been able to plant the Rage Seed while the fight was happening.
  16. Justice League Rebirth #1
Fear the Reaper The team takes on a big bug called a Reaper and with all members, including the new Superman and the 2 new Green Lanterns, they’re able to drive it off the planet.
  17. Green Lanterns #5
Rage Planet Part 5 With Bleez’ failure to prevent the Green Lantern interference, Atrocitus shows up on Earth to assist in raising the Hell Tower.
  18. Amazing Spider–Man #88
The Arms of Doctor Octopus As the name suggests, Doctor Octopus is back. He mentally controlled his arms from halfway across the country to escape from prison, hijacked a plane and demanded 10 million dollars ransom. Good thing he flew right to where Spidey was waiting to greet him.
  19. Silver Surfer #17
The Surfer Must Kill! Mephisto demands the Surfer destroy SHIELD but instead of an all out attack, he only destroys buildings letting the people escape and soon he learns of Mephisto’s Plan, to have the Surfer kill his own true love, Shalla Bal.
  20. Silver Surfer #18
To Smash the Inhumans! The Silver Surfer gets caught in the middle of the fight amongst the Inhumans as Maximus and Black Bolt continue their war. Best scene in the comic is when Lockjaw gets a hold of the surfboard and won’t let go!
  21. Avengers #83
Come on in…The Revolution’s Fine! Women’s Lib takes front stage in this issue as a new hero, Valkyrie, shows up and riles up the female members of the team to rebel against the men. Male chauvinists beware!

The Rook – Chapter 5
We got to see a day in the life of the original Myfanwy Thomas and see how well she was able to handle the unexpected. The current inhabitant of her body sure has some big shoes to fill.
