The Rook Chapter 10 – The Queen

Last time we got a history lesson about the Grafters to see what an enemy of the Checquy looks like. Needless to say, they were pretty formidable. I mean, it’s not that they were kindred organizations where both were competing to recruit people with supernatural powers, no…the Grafters actually made creatures with supernatural powers. That could prove pretty overpowering if they’re able to custom craft beings with specific abilities. But then supposedly they were killed off in the past, in pretty dramatic fashion.

In this short chapter we learn a bit more about the woman who runs the Checquy who will hopefully be up to the task of preventing any Grafter incursion onto the British Isles.

Read on if you’re not worried about spoilers…

Inchoate Thoughts

Summing up where things are…our heroine, Myfanwy, has had her memories erased. This attack could be the precursor to some kind of invasion from a group called the Grafters or it could simply be some sort of intraoffice power struggle, we’re not quite sure yet.

Thomas, as Myfanwy called the person who previously owned her body (and was mind wiped), was forewarned about the assault on her and prepared. She laid out a series of notes and pieces of information that would allow whoever woke up after the memory loss to be able to get up to speed quickly.

Myfanwy has been able to take advantage of that but she still finds herself in the middle of an international battle between super powered beings and she just happens to be one of the top level leaders of the British paranormal agency.

Lady Linda Farrier

Chapter 10 is all about the Lady of the Checquy. Linda Farrier is one of the top 2 officers of the organization and she’s got some interesting powers to go along with that. Her ability to enter and influence dreams is the stuff of nightmares and I certainly would not want someone else controlling my dreams or even just showing up in them.

From the looks of things she may even have additional powers that haven’t been hinted at yet but we can surmise that she can pretty much tell if someone is lying since she can go into their dreams. And wether you call it hypnotism or just dream-state threats, I’d kinda think people do what she suggests for fear that she may torture them every time they fall asleep.

Either way, I’m with Myfanwy and Thomas on this and hope she’s not the person behind the mind wipe.

Retrospective

So here we are…10 chapters in and we still have little to go on to figure out who erased Myfanwy’s memory. With someone in the Court suspected by Thomas and the introduction of the Grafters in previous chapters I’d say things are only getting worse.

With this chapter we not only learn more about Lady Farrier we also worry that she might be the responsible party since we’ve seen what she’s done in the past. But I’m not sure the memory wipe is the biggest issue at this point in the story. I mean Myfanwy is handling the situation pretty well. She’s been able to impersonate Thomas to the extent that she’s able to function in her job and among some of the people who knew her best. I’m starting to think that if there’s some kind of supernatural invasion happening that would be a bit more important. Of Course that assumes the two events are not related.

I suppose we’ll have to see.
