The Rook Chapter 11 – Apex House (Part 1)

With an emergency meeting called by the Rooks because of the interrogation from chapter 6, it looks like Myfanwy will finally get to meet the rest of the Checquy Court. The problem is that not only are they faced with an imminent invasion of supernatural creatures but Thomas was warned that someone in the Court was behind the attack that resulted in her memory loss.

Inchoate Thoughts

Summing up where things are…as stated, our heroine, Myfanwy, was attacked and her memories were erased. Before they were taken though, she was able to leave a bunch of notes and clues for herself to find so that she might be able to figure out who did it and what could be done about it. Before she was able to really get started in her investigation though, the Checquy (the government organization she works for) captured a spy.

He wasn’t necessarily a good spy since not only was he captured but he divulged information under interrogation before he died. That information made the leaders of the Checquy fearful because it suggested that a long time foe had returned and was preparing for a fight.

To get everyone prepared for what was to come, the Rooks (of whom Myfanwy was one) called an emergency meeting which is the focus of chapter 11.

Lunch with the Lady

Before the meeting though, Myfanwy still had to keep her appointment for lunch with the Lady of the Checquy and the ride over allowed her to test her abilities against the driver. Now I don’t know if I would mess with someone driving the car I was in, but Myfanwy took a chance…maybe erasing her memories made her a bit psychotic as well?

In any case, our hero survives the trip to lunch and meets up with the head of the Checquy where there’s an agreement to basically let Myfanwy continue functioning as a Rook until it’s no longer to Linda Farrier’s benefit. I suppose that’s for the best since the other option would make for a pretty short book.

Royal Appraisal

Beyond Farrier allowing Myfanwy to continue with the charade, we get some insight into what Linda thought of Thomas and I’m starting to get a vague sense of Total Recall. Could it be that Thomas set this whole thing up for some reason? In that movie, Arnie had memories implanted so he could infiltrate the rebels but all the while he was working for the bad guys.

Anyway, back to the story…apparently the Checquy were pretty disappointed with Thomas because she didn’t use her powers effectively which is something I don’t recall seeing in the X-Men. They always seemed to be pleased regardless of how someone’s powers expressed themselves. And little do the Checquy know that Myfanwy seems to have escaped the shackles of her former life and expanded her abilities to be usable without touching someone.

To Be Continued…

Well, things got really hectic at work and I wasn’t able to take a lunch to finish up chapter 11. I’ll put things on hold right now and jump back in tomorrow when I can give the story more attention. Regardless, with Lady Farrier knowing Myfanwy’s secret but willing to keep things on the down low, I am kinda thinking she might not be the cause of the assault on Thomas.

Until tomorrow…
