No Let Down After ComicCon@Home

Today is the first post-ComicCon@Home day and while the marathon is over I am pleased that with this year’s event I am able to watch and rewatch the panels after the con. And now that the con is over I can actually attend to baseball which has finally started in 2020. Finally I decided to throw a little bit of science into the post since I heard a story that interested me earlier today.

MLB is Back!

I am really surprised that they were able to get things working – actually, the players and owners were never able to come to an agreement – but Major League Baseball is back across America.

Ok, things are typical for my Angels – they started their first game with bases loaded in the 1st and did not score and they went into the late game and got bases loaded and did not score. They were able to drag things out so we got to see the first extra innings game of the season…but once again, they did not score.

Hopefully this is not something that will last into the next 9 or so weeks, but they really need to work on hitting when runners are in scoring position.

In any case, the Padres look to be playing pretty well at 3–1 and of course Houston is dominating at 3–1 as well. The big question comes out of the East and it’s not revolving around the Yankees though they are kinda involved. This is centered on the Marlins – I’m not sure if they’re the Florida Marlins or the Miami Marlins these days, but they are making headlines for things off the field. It seems they can’t perform the simple steps necessary to prevent themselves from contracting COVID. I’m not sure what it is…are they not washing their hands? Are they not wearing masks? Are they having unprotected sex? Who knows what’s going on but they are threatening to stop the whole season because they have behaved irresponsibly.

Apparently more than 10 of their personnel have tested positive and it’s really put their whole season on hold. They’re not gonna be playing all week and they’ve caused the Phillies, Yankees, and Orioles to postpone games as well. It’s a real mess.

You’d think that professionals would be more careful when it comes to their job.

Regardless, MLB is back and I’m happy to see them playing some ball. I just hope my Angels do better than they’ve started out.

Thoughts on the Image Comics Spotlight panel

Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw, and Image Comics are brining an event so huge to comics that it will redefine the way comic book events unfold.

According to the panel from San Diego Comic-Con and ComicCon@Home, Crossover is not just an event that takes place between the pages of your favorite floppy, it spills over into your life as well.

Yup…the event is so massive and impactful that superheroes and villains are thrown into our world. Comic readers and retailers alike will experience the reality of stories that fly off the page.

According to Donny Cates, this is like imagining “Avengers Endgame but as Cloverfield”.

Now, I enjoyed both those movies and the other influence Cates mentions is that people will have to deal with the event in a similar way that The Leftovers saw people dealing with half the human race disappearing.

This sounds truly exciting and I am gonna jump onboard this title from Image Comics to see where they take me. I’m looking forward to it.

One Last Thing

I heard a cool story today as I was running and I thought I’d pass on a few of my impressions.

Typically while I run I am either listening to an audiobook or a podcast and today I happened to be listening to a science podcast and it was pretty interesting.

Apparently with the reduction in the number of bees in the world there have been a number of studies that are trying to figure out how we will be able to pollinate the plants of the world. They’ve tried a variety of technological attempts, even drones but now they’ve seemingly hit on something thats actually kinda whimsical.

They are using soap bubbles to perform the pollination. And apparently it works pretty well.

Once they worked a good balance between too little and too much soap they were able to get 95% of the plants they tested to produce fruit.

Now I would certainly like to see science figure out what is up with the bees and correct that problem but at least we have a safety net if we need one.

It’s a Wrap

So today was a pretty varied day. I got to get into the MLB season and am pretty happy to see my favorite sport back even if I can’t go to the stadium to see a game in person. I also watched another panel from ComicCon@Home and was excited to see that Image Comics, which has a number of series I enjoy, has a pretty big ‘event’ book coming out that looks pretty good. Finally I’m happy to throw in some science into my post. Now I just need to get back into posting about gaming again.
