Ramble for September 2, 2022

As I mentioned the other day, Artie Moreno is looking to sell the Angels, and I started taking a look at how the team has faired under his ownership. For some reason, I have the impression that they have been really bad ever since Artie took over, so I went to the record books to see if that belief had any basis in reality. What first jumped out at me as I looked at Wikipedia is that the team has gone through 2 name changes since Artie has owned them.

When Moreno bought the Angels, they were called the Anaheim Angels, and that lasted until 2005, when he changed the name to Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Ten years of that mouthful of a name and he changed the team to the Los Angeles Angels. And I think this might be where my opinion of how bad they have become under Artie is founded.

Since 2016 when Artie dropped Anaheim from the name and made the team fully a Los Angeles team, they have never had a winning season. The closest they got was in 2017 and 2018, when they went 80 – 82 each year.
On the whole, the team has won 409 games and lost 461, and that is not counting the craptacular year they are having this season. That’s a .470 record in the past six seasons, and they are rolling out a .432 record so far in 2022, which is only going to get them further from 50%.

Putting things in perspective, the real Los Angeles team – the Dodgers – have put together a record of 542 and 329 in those same seasons. A .622 winning record and they’ve won over 80 games more than the Angels during that time. They’ve also won 90 games so far in 2022, which guarantees them another winning season.

I think I found where a portion of my frustration lies. The Angels have never been a Los Angeles team – they are from Anaheim. Anaheim is not even in Los Angeles Country, it’s in Orange County, so maybe there’s a karma problem with the team that plays in Anaheim Stadium calling themselves the Los Angeles Angels?

Just a thought but maybe whoever the next owner or the Angels is, they might consider dropping the Los Angeles from their name and go back to something with less of a jinx.

Oops, I was not going to dive into this as much as I did, but once I started looking at the records and the names, I went too far and spent all the time I had for rambling today. Anyway, that’s all I have for today. I’m hoping to ramble some more soon, and In any case, I’m looking forward to making the rest of today a good one, and I hope you all have a great day.
