A Day for Reading and New Starts on #Blaugust Day 20

Daily Ramble 18: A Day for Reading and New Starts

I’m hoping things have settled down a bit and are more like today. I was actually able to do a few things on #BlaugustReborn Day 20 and I’m happy to have had some reading time. I started up on my next book of the month by taking a stab at Jade City by Fonda Lee. So far it looks like it’ll be a quick read as it’s well written and action packed. Hopefully it’ll continue that way. I also started up a new comic series – Weapon X. This title by Greg Pak and Greg Land is another that features one of my current favorite Marvel characters – Old Man Logan. Issue One sets a pretty decent hook and I’ll be following this one since there are already 14 of them on Marvel Unlimited. Finally, today I took a quick look at the Battle Angel Alita trailer which came out a few weeks ago. This could be a lot of fun.

Magical Gangs and Asian Mafia in Jade City

Jade City by Fonda Lee is basically an urban fantasy type read in which we follow the battles between rival kung-fu gangs that can use magic. I’m just starting out but I’m already hooked by the premise and the first few chapters have piqued my interest. The world is set up where jade jewelry is used to unlock magical abilities and only certain people, called Green Bones, can use the jade. These Green Bones are related to each other and are grouped into a couple of large families – the Kaul family who run the No Peak Clan and their main rivals, the Mountain Clan. The two families compete with each other in an organized crime fashion where each “protects” certain areas and businesses of the city and tries to out position the other clan in influence and wealth. So far it’s been pretty cool and I’m looking forward to getting through this fun and easy read.

Battle Angel Alita Trailer

I’m still only a few chapters into the first volume of the Battle Angel Alita manga but I’m enjoying it quite a bit and I’m totally excited to learn that there will be a live action movie released later this year for the title. I can imagine that this could be a bit like Terminator but with the cyborg friendly to people kinda like the second installment of that series. I could also imagine that the Scrapyard where everything’s happened that I’ve read so far would easily fit into the Blade Runner style of futuristic cities. In any case, I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Here’s the most recent trailer…

Wolverine and Sabertooth on the Same Side?

Finally, I just finished reading the first issues of the 2017 installment of Weapon X and I think I’m gonna continue it. The idea is that someone has reopened the Weapon X program but instead of creating new mutants they’re focusing on building cyborgs that target mutants for extermination. This situation has made strange teammates of Old Man Logan and Sabertooth and could definitely lead to some interesting situations.
