Winning with Old Man Logan

Daily Ramble 204: Winning with Old Man Logan

I’ve been trying to read some more recent comics and Marvel’s subscription service works great for that. The most recent comics there might be 6 months or so old but they’re a lot newer than most of what I’ve been reading. It also lets me read stuff that I just want to try out rather than forcing me to fork over $$$ when I just want to sample something. So today I ramble about a really good book I found and a series I plan on reading. I also comment on the Angels’ win over Kansas City Friday.

Old Man Logan #1

Berserker by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino. Published by Marvel Comics, 2016.
When I get to read a story like this on a service that provides unlimited access to nearly all the comics published by a major company it really makes it worth the money. I just wish DC had a product similar to Marvel Unlimited.

In any case, Old Man Logan #1 was a fun read. The idea is that Wolverine lived 50 years into the future but not without troubles – his family was killed, super villains took over, and the country is a wasteland. He no longer goes by the name Wolverine but prefers to be called Logan and at the start of the issue, something has sent him back to 2016 (the present) and he’s a bit confused. Once he figures out what year it is though, he realizes he’s got the opportunity to right the wrongs done to him in those 50 years. Will he be able to stop the super villains, save his family, and make the country great again?

To start setting things right, he goes after The Black Butcher who we last saw (in the future) smacking Logan’s son around. While he’s a bit slower than he was when he was younger, Old Man Logan gets the job done and since I’ve never read a Wolverine series before, I’m realizing what I’ve been missing. This was really good.

The comic was an enjoyable read with really distinct art and an interesting story and my first impression of this issue is an A. I’m also gonna read the next issue right now.

This comic can be found on Marvel Unlimited, Comixology or at your local comic book shop.

Come from Behind

Friday, for the first time in almost a weèk, the Angels found themselves losing during a game. For 48 innings, over the course of 6 games, the Angels had looked up at the scoreboard to see themselves ahead. That changed on Friday when the Royals took a 4 to 2 lead in the 4th inning on singles by Paulo Orlando and Cam Gallagher that collectively scored 3.

They didn’t like being behind though and turned things around in the 7th and 8th to reclaim the lead and the victory 5–4. 6 in a row and the Angles are getting contributions from all over the lineup. Today it was Ian Kinsler who went 3 for 4 with and RBI and 2 runs who gets my Player of the Game. It was his single in the 8th that finally gave the team the lead, but with 2 stolen bases earlier in the game, he was the spark that was tied to 3 outta the 5 runs the team scored…and it was only his 2nd game back from the DL.

On the pitching side, Andrew Heaney pitched well enough to keep the game close but only threw for 5 innings. It was his first start off the DL so it’s understandable he was a bit rusty, but hopefully he’ll get back into the swing of things by this next outing. With him leaving early, it was up to 5 relievers to shut down KC over the final 4 innings and once again, they did their job, this time without the luxury of a large lead.
