Losing the Series in New York

With a split for the first two games in the series it was only a simple thing for the Angels to end up losing the series in New York.

The first game resulted in a close pitcher battle and a 2-1 Yankee win. The second game featured an incredible 5 for 5 performance by Mike Trout that culminated in an 11-4 victory for the Angels. Sadly, Garrett Richards couldn’t get outta the 3rd innng in the finale and gave the Yankees all the runs they needed to beat the Angels 3-1.

Richards’ Bad Day

Garrett threw 70 pitches over 2 1/3 innings but only 36 of them landed for strikes. He clearly had some control issues and actually gave up 5 walks in that short outting. I hope nothing is physically wrong with him it then he never seems to pitch very well against the Yankees.

Fortunately the bullpen threw 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball – but then New York had all the runs they needed as the Angels’ anemic offense showed back up. 4 hits and only 9 base runners didn’t lead to more than one run for my team and they certainly could have used some of the offense from Saturday to make the game more competitive.

In the end the only player who really performed for the offense was Andrelton Simmons. He managed a single and a home run off Tanaka but that was pretty much it. Maldonado and Cozart managed hits as well but Simmons gets my Player of the Game.

Today the Angels open a 4 game series in Detroit and are hoping to turn around things other road trip. So far, against Toronto and the Yankees, they’ve gone 3-3 but they start with Skaggs on on the mound and he’s pitched pretty well against Detroit in the past (1-0, 0.77 ERA).
