Batman, Wolverine, and Open Registration

Daily Ramble 43

The aftermath of a bombing, defective genetics, and registration feature prominently in my ramble today as I look at the following:
+ A first look at Batman: The Long Halloween part 2
+ A first look at All-New Wolverine #33
+ The announcement of the date for Comic-Con open registration

First Look at Batman: The Long Halloween – Part 2

Part 2 (of 13) of the graphic novel dives into the bombing of Harvey Dent’s home and kinda seems to write off the murder of Johnny Vitti as gang warfare. The only character who even brings it up is Johnny’s mother, Carla. Regardless, with Thanksgiving upon them and a month since anyone’s seen Dent, Gordon and Batman arrest “The Irish”, the gang who took responsibility for the bombing.

They question the five members and while each confesses to playing a part in the crime, none implicate Falcone. Without anything pointing to The Roman as the mastermind behind the bombing, they set the thugs free to see what happens. And as the thugs celebrate Thanksgiving in their hideout, someone unexpected arrives with a .22 caliber gun with a taped handle and filed off serial number and a baby bottle nipple as a silencer. This time the killer leaves a cornucopia rather than a pumpkin as a marker for the deaths.

Whatever is going on and whoever is committing these murders sure seems to be out to get Falcone’s operatives. Perhaps now that there are multiple crime scenes with the same gun evidence, Batman and Gordon will start looking for the serial killer.

First Look at Old Woman Laura – Part 1

All-New Wolverine #33 starts off the final story arc of the wonderful Laura Kinney Wolverine series. I’ve really enjoyed the stories she’s been in and the series written by Tom Taylor has pulled me in as a huge fan of the young clone as she has tried to carry the torch laid down when Logan fell. I think she’s done a pretty good job of it and in Old Woman Laura it’s looking like we’ll be seeing how her cloned cells are her ultimate downfall. I still have hopes that this is gonna just be some alternate future type thing like Old Man Logan’s timeline before he came back to the present day Marvel Universe, but we’ll have to see how things play out. I seriously can’t see them leaving such a strong character on the shelf with just 35 issues dedicated to her solo title.

In any case, years in the future, as the heroes have virtually wiped out crime and super villains, Laura has discovered that there is a mistake in her cloned genes, a mistake that is fatal. But she still has some time left and with that time, she wants to finish off her bucket list that has 2 things left – save her sister Bellona and kill Doctor Doom. Fortunately she can take care of them both with a quick trip to Latveria, but she won’t be going alone. Gabby, her cloned sister is joining her on the mission along with a cybernetically enhanced Maria Hill.

As is usual with these All-New Wolverine stories I’m hooked right away but I worry that with only 2 issues left in the series Laura has some pretty big goals she’s set out for herself. Regardless, I’m looking forward to finding out how she takes care of things and if she’s able to check off her list before the end.

San Diego Comic-Con International Tickets

I just found out today that open registration is coming up fast for the San Diego Comic-Con 2019. If you’ve got a member ID you can get all prepared to fight the internet hordes on Saturday November 10th.

Sadly, when the preregistration lottery occurred I was shut out and I’ll be looking to see if I can continue my string of attendance. 2019 will be the 50th anniversary so I’m wondering if they’ll be anything special going on, but regardless, every year is special and every year has been a blast.

I’ll be waiting by my computer on Saturday morning, will you?
