Endings and Beginnings

With all the crap that went on today at work, I’m still a happy camper. I finished off a book that, even though I ended up not liking too much, was still a decent read. AND…tomorrow starts the Spring Training games for my Angels. I am pretty excited and am looking forward to a fun season.

The Nightjar

This was a decent first novel by Deborah Hewitt that probably could have used some more editing. The general idea was that our heroine, Alice, was an aviarist who could see the nightjars that guard the souls of our people. As the term aviarist implies, this flavor of magic-user can work with birds, and these nightjars are hidden magical birds that everyone has. Everyone that is alive, that is. In any case, I found many of the ideas in the story interesting, but the descriptions and scenes seemed to go on too long.

In particular, the ending seemed to come early, and then I saw there were another few chapters to go…what was going to be covered…I wasn’t sure.

In the end, the book was pretty good, but I’m not sure I’m on board for a sequel. I just didn’t get hooked, and while the concepts were cool, I needed more.

One final thing of note that really threw me off this book was a particular scene where they try to recruit a necromancer to her cause. The whole thing involved dogs and zombies, and I just was not a fan.

Spring Training Games

There were a few games today that kicked off the Spring Training schedule in MLB but I didn’t get a chance to watch any due to a lot of stuff going on while I was at work. Needless to say, I am excited to see that the season is getting started, and I am hopeful for my Angels. Sure, they failed to pick up an ace pitcher that they really needed, but the did grab the best position player available and one that slots nicely next to Mike Trout.

From all indications, Trout is rated as the number one position player in the league and I’m seeing clear signs that Rendon is rated at least 6th. That’s a pretty big one-two punch. They may not have pitched up an ace pitcher but with those guys in the lineup they can make mediocre pitchers look pretty good.

At least I hope so.

In any case, I’m excited for the season even with all the crap that’s been going on about the cheating Astros. I just wish the commissioner handled things better and actually punished the people who were doing the cheating.

It’s a Wrap

An ending and a beginning…I’m certainly hoping the beginning is gonna be a lot better than the ending. Even so, I’m excited for the MLB season to get going.
