Amnesia

The common theme running through today’s ramble is losing your memories. In the past, I’ve covered The Rook where the whole premise is that the main character had her memories wiped. And in the comic I just read, we also see a loss of memory. The underlying personalities of the characters who suffer the loss seem to remain intact but one, Myfanwy in The Rook, prepared for her memory loss while Raphael pretty much wasn’t even sentient when he lost his memories. I suppose though, since I am going back to the start of my reading ofThe Rook I am also kinda losing my memories. In any case, here’s a little ramble down memory loss lane…

Turtle Forgetfulness

TMNT #3

So why does Old Hob dislike the Turtles so much?

We kinda get an answer in this phase of the story but the issue focuses more on the separation between Raphael and the rest of the team. We do get glimpses of how Splinter and his Turtles escaped from the lab (from the earlier issues) but I’m not really sure when Raph went missing or when he lost his memory. Meanwhile, the three turtles that Master Splinter is training are starting to chafe under the constant search for thier lost brother.

While the brothers scour the city every night for Raph, he’s hanging out with Casey Jones and retrieving purses for old ladies and doing good deeds. Until, that is, Old Hob’s gang finds him.

The next issue could get ugly.

Heading Back Into the Chequey

The Rook by Daniel O’Malley is a great read and I loved it so much that I started working on an in-depth read I was calling a Web Chronology. I got up to chapter 15 and life took over and I kinda placed the whole thing on hold. That was months ago.

Flash forward to today and while I’d like to jump back into that project, I feel some modifications are in order. I think I’m gonna include a brief blurb of the chapters in my regular Ramble sessions to provide a general sense of what goes on in the chapter. Then I want to look into something more like the recommendations I put together for the comic books I read. I’ve realized that some chapters are much more compelling in stories while others provide good background information. I figure it would be worthwhile to point out the snoozers and page-turners.

Finally, I am gonna start back at the beginning, at least with the Rambles and recommendations. I’ll eventually catch up to chapter 16 and be able to continue my web chronology, but I think it’s been long enough that I need to sorta reset things.

Anyway, we’ll see how this works out. As usual, I reserve the right to completely give up on this project like I’ve done so many times before. Hopefully I’ll stick to this one though.

It’s a Wrap

So…two stories with similar memory loss today. Hopefully both will turn out well – I have a pretty good idea they will. I think Raphael’s story is particularly interesting since he actually came from a situation where he was not expected to have memories. I mean, how much past does a turtle really remember? Regardless, he should have at least remembered he had brothers I think, and hopefully in the next few issues he will. Maybe Old Hob’s gang will beat him up so bad that he starts remembering?
