Impressing Stilgar

Today I’m continuing my snapshot of chapter 12 of Dune since there is so much going on here. We need a prominent Fremen leader, Duncan Idaho is granted a crysknife, and we see the deepening of Leto’s worry.

The Council Continues

The second part of Chapter 12 continues the War council of the Atreides but in this half a Fremen representative, Stilgar, meets the assmebled staff.

Not known to Stilgar, the Duke is hoping to befriend the Fremen to provide soldiers to fight against the Harkonnen. It should not be difficult since the Fremen seem to dislike their former overlords with a passion and where the Baron and his ilk were disrepetful of the Fremen culture, Duke Leto and his partisans show honor and respect to the native people.

Regardless of what the Duke wants, he was able to impress Stilgar and live up to the concept that he plans to rule “with the consent of the governed.”

The council ends and even with positive attitudes expressed during by many, it’s clear to Paul that things are in a very precarious situation for the family. His mind goes back to what the Reverend Mother said of the Duke “…for the father, nothing.”

As with the first half, I rate this second half of the chapter a Must Read and anticipate some serious conflict in the updcoming chapters.
