Blaugust 2022 Day 8

Yesterday I kinda threw together a last-minute ramble since I had procrastinated a bit too much and found myself way behind. Today is a little bit better since I kinda put some of the pieces of this post together ahead of time. I can’t say that I actually drafted it before I edited it, but it seems most of my posts are edited while I draft anyway. So, without further ado…

My name is Rambling Redshirt, and I am a fan of Star Trek…Trekkie, Trekker, or whatever you want to call us, I am one. As if you couldn’t tell based on my moniker, I wanted to make it clear.

I’ve loved Star Trek for decades. But I’m not a blindly adoring fan. I love the original and was grateful for the Next Generation. My favorite is Deep Space Nine, and I enjoyed Voyager. With that said, I stopped watching Enterprise after a few episodes.

While I thought the storylines were interesting and the series was going pretty well, I could not stand the opening music/song that destroyed the show for me. I tried watching by skipping the opening credits, but that was just not Star Trek for me. I liked the characters. The dog and the captain were great, but that opening musical interlude was atrocious. Why did some executives think any singer would be able to attain the beauty of the instrumental musical pieces that introduced decades of Star Trek shows and movies?

Anyway, I stopped watching a show that I loved…a show that got me through high school, college, and on into the real world. Decades of enjoyment were destroyed by the opening credits music on that Enterprise show. It crushed me.

But then I started playing Star Fleet Battles, Star Fleet Command, and eventually Star Trek Online. My gaming – video, and tabletop – saved my enjoyment of a franchise I loved.

I still didn’t watch the TV show and felt so betrayed that I haven’t watched Discovery or Picard either, but I finally did give Strange New Worlds a shot. And once again, my love of Star Trek was rekindled. I’ve only watched through 4 episodes, but I am enjoying Star Trek again, and that makes me happy.

I think I might go back and give Discovery a shot and Picard as well, but I’m conflicted as to whether I should go back to Enterprise. I think I could survive the experience of that awful opening song, or at least I could hit the mute button, but I think it may be time to give the rest of that series a try.

I think going back to Enterprise may help me fill a hole in my Trekkie/Trekker status and fulfill my fandom even more.

My name is Rambling Redshirt, and I am a fan of Star Trek once again.

  1. I couldn’t get through the first episode of Discovery, Love Picard, though season two was a bit slow and uneven. Strange New Worlds was good. Mostly because Spock and Pike are great characters.
