Marvelous Marvel Unlimited

My year of Marvel Unlimited is coming to a close and I'd have to say it's been worth the $69 I spent for the year.

I'm not sure how many comics I've read, but I've got over 100 in my library and I've at least looked at each of those, and the cool thing is many of the ones I did read are classics. I don't think that without this service I'd have an opportunity to read many of the 40 and 50 year old comics I've looked at. The early works of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby from the 60s are something I never thought I'd be able to see, and I'm really enjoying some of those classic origin stories. So much so, I'm saddened that DC doesn't have a similar offering. It's almost as if DC doesn't want people to embrace the continuity of their world.

In any case, I'm gonna resubscribe for another year – I definitely think it's worth it. I even think I'll read more this year.

A website I frequent – Comic Book Herald – has a “My Marvelous Year” series of posts that they have been running since the beginning of the year in which they cover a year's worth of Marvel comics each week. They don't cover all the comics, but have a selection that highlights what is going on in the Marvel Universe during that year. At this point, they are up to 1967 and while I haven't kept up with them, the comics they recommend give a good idea of what to read from Marvel Unlimited that will give you a feel for the characters and the important story arcs.

Starting in the Silver Age of Marvel means some things are a bit dated, but I am really enjoying reading these stories as they develop heroes and villains I've known, or at least thought I've known, since I was a kid.
