Hunters, Logan, and Upton

Daily Ramble 229: Hunters, Logan, and Upton

The baseball game wasn’t all that great but Justin Upton did pick up his 7th home run of the season for the losing Angels. While that was a disappointment, I had a good time getting though more of the Archet storyline in the Lord of the Rings tutorial and I continued reading the very enjoyable Old Man Logan. 2 outta 3 ain’t bad.

Archet Prepares to Fight

After trying in vain last time to get Captain Brackenbrook to believe there’s a threat to Archet from the Blackwold’s, the letter that Farmer Spingley provided finally brought the Captain to his senses. And with his new understanding, he actually asks Strider for advice. He suggests Catathien and I seek the aid of Jon, the Captain’s son who’s been exiled because of his distrust of Calder Cob. So Cat and I head out to the hunter’s lodge to recruit them to defend the village.

Jon agrees to help and suggests Cat and I head over to Blackwold’s Roost to see if we can figure out what their plan of attack is, at least this Brackenbrook has a strategic mind.

The good thing about infiltrating the Roost is that it offers Cat an opportunity to test out her newly acquired Warden skills against decent opponents. And she acquits herself well, taking out a bunch of brigands. She’s still getting used to the gambits and setting up between In the Fray and Assailment. I for one, haven’t figured out if she can start a gambit in one stance and shift to the other without having to reset.

Regardless, Cat handles the brigands and even takes out their lieutenant. We grab the plans and head back to the Hunting Lodge to see how many men Jon was able to muster.

With final defense preparations underway Cat and I are sent back out to scout the Old East Path. The Blackwold plans indicated they were gonna use that as their primary attack vector and we have to ensure that there’s no easy entry into the town from that direction.

Fortunately as Atli Spider-bane indicated, the path is crawling with spiders and between them and the dead end at the end of the path we should be able to inflict some serious pain on these brigands before they even get to Archet.

With the defenses set up and preparations complete the only thing to do is wait for the attack and fight the evil Blackwolds.

First Look at Old Man Logan #4

Berserker: Part Four by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino. Published by Marvel Comics, 2016.
This issue brings to a conclusion the Berserker storyline and with it, Logan starts to accept the situation he finds himself in.

Somehow, he’s been transported through time and it’s 50 years before the disaster of the villains uprising. He’s already fought the Black Butcher and the Hulk trying to exact revenge for their part in killing his family. When he goes after Mysterio, though, he runs into some issues in the form of Kate Bishop as Hawkeye.

Expecting Clint Barton, his friend, Logan still accepts her aid to track down the illusion creating villain. But when he goes all out in attacking the poor souls who were using his Mysterio’s old hideout, Kate calls in Steve Rogers to help talk sense into Logan.

Of course Wolverine thinks this is all just part of Mysterio’s mind tricks and he lashes out at both Kate and Steve until finally they knock him out and take him up to Alberta. Here is where things start to get through to the stubborn Logan.

Up in Canada, near where Wolverine used to call home, the X-Men set up a shrine for the hero…a shrine where Wolverine is entombed in adamantium.

Apparently this is not the world that Old Man Logan came from because here, Wolverine died 50 years before the villain uprising.

This is a really good issue and it draws a great storyline to a close. The art has been wonderful all the way through and the way that Andrea Sorrentino’s pencils draw all the lines on the characters is brilliant.

While I haven’t read much in the way of Wolverine I certainly want to now and I’m definitely continuing the Old Man Logan title.

I rate this issue an A-.

Mile High Loss

For a change, the offense had some troubles in of all places…Colorado. I thought teams were supposed to hit lots of home runs at Coors Field. I guess the Angels bats didn’t really get the memo.

As it was, Justin Upton did launch one into the night but he’s the only one who really got the bat on the ball. With 6 hits the Angels only picked up that one extra vase hit and that didn’t come till the 8th inning. For the most part, it was Jon Gray’s night for Colorado. He struck out 8 and never had any real troubles after the first inning.

Though Andrew Heaney took the loss, he pitched pretty well too, giving up 2 runs in 6 innings but once again the bullpen couldn’t hold.

Upton picks up my Player of the Game as he was the only Angel to collect multiple hits and he was also the only one to knock in any runs. He was 2 for 4 with that home run, but he struck out twice. Hopefully his recent offensive burst will continue and he’ll keep coming back from his early season slump.
