Watching Television the Third Week of May 2018

Favorites from the Week ending May 19th

  • Westworld season 2 episode 4 – The Riddle of the Sphinx. In this episode we gain some insight into the reasons William/The Man in Black, and through them, the Delos Corporation, are invested in Westworld. They want to use the hosts to provide immortality. And Jim Delos, William’s father-in-law is the first guinea pig. Apparently he died of an illness but not before the techs at Westworld were able to “download” him into a host. Unfortunately the copy isn’t perfect and the host degrades every time they put him in there even though they try building upgrades (149 times that we know of). Beyond this, we see that Elsie is in fact still alive and she now knows that Bernard is a host…since she had to assist him in topping off his cerebral fluid. Finally, though there’s a ton more in this episode, we learn that Grace (the survivor from Colonial India World) appears to be the daughter of the Man in Black. So much is going on it’s hard to keep track of everything but I sure like this show. Each week is a gift.

  • Lucifer season 3, episode 24 – A Devil of my Word. This very well could be the series finale since Fox has declared that this show is cancelled. I’d certainly prefer that someone else pick it up (like the CW or Netflix) but if this is indeed the finale it leaves a bunch of questions. Sure, the 3rd season had some problems and the various story lines (either of the love triangles – Amenadiel/Maze/Linda or Lucifer/Cain/Chloe) of the season didn’t all hold water but I still think this is a pretty good show. I really enjoyed the concept of Cain and Lucifer in a struggle though I preferred when they were directly opposed to each other rather than trying to gain Chloe’s affection – she just never seemed to provide much to fight over and after 3 seasons, Lauren German still can’t act. If this is the last show at least the series was fun. I never expected it to be an emmy winner.
  • Killing Eve season 1, episode 6 – Take Me to the Hole!. So Nadia didn’t die when Villanelle ran over her (multiple times), but is instead being kept in a Russian prison. Konstantin sets Villanelle up to infiltrate the prison to kill her ex-lover but before that we have some developments on the British side of things. Eve and Carolyn find out about Nadia and head to Russia to interrogate her but as they are about to get the answers to a key question, Konstantin interrupts and Nadia clams up. Too bad…Villanelle manages to get to Nadia and kill her before anything further can be learned but Eve starts to wonder if there might be more going on since Carolyn seems to know people in Russia better than an normal agent would. I’m definitely enjoying this show and am pleased to see that there’s another season planned.
  • The Terror season 1, episode 9 – The C, the C, the Open C. Mr. Blanky discovers the Northwest Passage 10 seconds before the Tuunbaq eats him and that’s pretty much the high point of this episode. Both groups face the prospect of eating their shipmates to prevent starvation and of course they go in opposite directions. Hickey even goes to the point of forcing Dr. Goodsir to perform the butchery. To drag things down even further, Hickey sets his men to attack Crozier’s group and they manage to capture the Captain. Things are not looking good for either of the two groups and with one episode left I’m not sure how this is all gonna play out other than I’m pretty sure in the real story, no one made it back to England.
  • The Americans seasons 6, episode 8 – The Summit. Loyalties are definitely being questioned as we race to the final episode. Philip actually tells Elizabeth that he’s been “working” for the Soviet Government rather than The Centre and it looks like she may be wondering how Gorbachev and the KGB are related anymore. Is she a KGB agent first or a Soviet citizen first? To add to those serious issues, Stan is getting closer to tying his neighbors to the Russian spy network the FBI’s been trying to infiltrate. Will he be able to put everything together before Philip and Elizabeth stop spying or will they find out how close he is and have to kill him? The tension is really high this season and I just want to see the last 2 episodes right now!

Other shows I Enjoyed

  • Genius season 2, episode 2 – Chapter 2
  • Jeremy Wade’s Mighty Rivers season 1, episode 6 – The Zambezi. I’ve always enjoyed everything Jeremy Wade’s done.

Dropped from the TiVo

  • Trust – I watched episode 7 (Kodachrome) and 8 (In the Name of the Father) and I’m done. I refuse to watch any more of a show that insists on presenting more that 50% of the dialog in a foreign language. Sure, I love the cinematography and the acting is pretty good, but since I can’t understand half the show without reading instead of looking at the scenery, I give up. No more.
