Picks and Secrets

Just a quick ramble this morning that takes a look at building my pull list for the week and a surprising relationship between WoW and Ancient Egypt that I somehow threw together.

Picking Out Weekly Comics

The House of X story continues this week and it’s been pretty interesting so far. I’m liking how it integrates with the Powers of X series and how they look at both the personal and the big picture of the mutant struggle. While I’ve got Marvel Unlimited, this is an arc I had to buy to keep up with things as they develop. There’s just too much here to wait 6 months.

My other picks this week tend to focus on comics from publishers I don’t have access to in a service. Which is fine by me. I enjoy the services for the long term stories that I haven’t been following for the decades they’ve been published but the current stuff, I usually stick with different publishers.

While I’m looking at picking up issues of Usagi Yojimbo, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Die, there are some new titles that look pretty good and that I’d like to taste to see if they’ll stick on my list. Going to the Chapel, Triage, Something is Killing the Children, and Battlepug all leaped out at me this week and I’m gonna give them a chance. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Nitocris and Secrets

I just happened to be recording a show called Secrets on the Smithsonian channel and I was surprised when I heard one of my made up gaming character names showed up in Ancient Egypt. I came up with the name Nitocris back when I started my WoW Priest in vanilla. In creating the character, I pretty much threw together a few syllables that I liked the sound of and it kinda stuck. Now I find out that Nitocris was the daughter of Psamtik of Egypt and became the “wife of Amun” from 655 BC to 585 BC. It sure is strange to hear the name of one of my characters on a TV show about Ancient Egypt. I didn’t even know she represented a real person and was only watching the show because the title – The Pharaoh in the Suburbs sounded interesting.

I wonder how many people create made up names that turn out to be real historical figures?
