Running with Two Pair of Socks On

Last week I talked about my week in running and then highlighted some of the socks I wear to make sure I don’t get blisters while running. Today I take a look at the second pair of socks I use to cushion the impact my foot makes when it hits the ground.

Weekly Running Results

This week I took things a bit easy as far as my mileage goes. I felt a bit drained all week, but I kept things going and got in at least 3 miles each day. I didn’t push things beyond a basic 3×1 mile set, though, and I ended up with a little over 27 miles for the week.

While I may not have logged more than previous weeks, I think it was a good week, and I felt like I was in need of a little bit of a pull-back week. Basically, even when I’m working to build up mileage to get ready for a marathon, there are times every couple of weeks where experts suggest you scale back the distance to let some of the training burn-in. These weeks help your legs recover a bit more than during standard weeks, and it helps to maintain endurance and build up muscle.

So that’s what I considered this week. I may not be working up to a marathon or any kind of race at this time, but I pulled back to let some of my training burn-in. I’ll most likely get back to 28+ miles next week, be even if I take another slow week, I’m still feeling good about my running.

Running Gear

Last week I talked about my base layer sock – the Injinji. These toe socks are great for my running, and for the most part, I haven’t gone out running without them.

This week I’m looking into my outer foot layer, or I guess it’ll be my middle foot layer since my shoes would be the outer layer.

For my outer sock, I use a brand called Thorlos. More specifically, I run with the Thorlos JMX Max Cushion Running Ankle Socks.

These socks are great, and I could actually run with just them, which I’ve done a few times when I couldn’t find a clean pair of my Injinjis.

The main draw for me with these socks is the cushioning. They’ve got extra padding for the ball of my foot and my heel, so I feel like I’m well protected while running on any surface.

The short ankle-high height works better for me since I like something to grab onto when I put on my socks. It works nicely with my Injinji because those are shorter and hide inside the Thorlos.

I went back into my order history to see when the last time I purchased some of these socks, and I realize they’ve lasted me since 2009.

These are excellent socks that I highly recommend. I’ve even purchased their walking socks for going to Comic-Con, and they’ve worked great.

It’s a Wrap

With both sets of socks covered – Injinji last week and Thorlos this week I’ve covered 2/3rds of my foot gear for running. Next up is my shoes.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that while Thorlos are made in North Carolina, Injinji is headquartered down the street here in San Diego…not bad.
