A Day of Stories

Somehow I fell into a day with some good stories. These are some of my favorite days, particularly when I need a diversion from things like COVID, work, and bills. It’s also pretty hot. Sure, temperatures were only in the 80s here, but even when I went out for my run at 6 am, it was already in the 70s and way too hot. I was only able to go for a two-mile stint before I decided I would take it easy today.

Anyway, good stories have saved the day and turned things around.

Starting the Forsaken Campaign

Wow!

That initial mission in the Forsaken campaign is a rough one. I was totally not expecting the outcome of that whole thing, but beyond that, it was not an easy set of bad guys to fight.

I’m pretty sure that was the most challenging starting missions of any of the campaigns I’ve tried out so far, and this is now the 4th story arc that I am attempting. I did like the story that it told, though, and I hope that the rest of the campaign continues with such a compelling tale.

Particularly, I think the whole idea of a prison break was cool, and the layout of the maps made me think of Guardians of the Galaxy too.

So I’d say, on the whole, this is a successfully designed campaign so far, and I’m looking forward to moving through it.

A Jump Back to 1632

Well, no comics yet, but I am back to reading. One thing I will say is that it’s a hell of a lot easier to listen to audiobooks while I’m running rather than flipping through comic books.

In any case, the town of Grantville West Virginia has been zapped back to the 1600s and into the middle of a war in Germany. They’ve got all the goodies you can imagine from the 20th century – cars, guns, medicine – but they are in an unfamiliar place with people that speak German. And the guys they meet are more the rape and pillage type rather than the philosophical and musical type.

I think the author does a pretty good job of laying out the overall concept of the situation even though this is the first novel in the series. And the contrast between how barbaric and ruthless the natives are in the German countryside and the charm and friendliness of the Virginians is pretty stark. He even manages to throw in how religiously tolerant the Americans are in comparison to medieval Europe.

So far, I’m glad I jumped on board a book I remember enjoying after the non-stop, over-sexualized story I just finished in Black Leopard, Red Wolf. Perhaps with a familiar story, I can rebuild my motivation to read more often and get back to the pace I used to read at. I used to read a book or two a week and loved it…now I’m lucky to finish one off a month. I gotta get back to my happy place and back to reading more.

Promptapalooza Prompt Day 15

Today is also day 15 of Blaugust, or rather, it is the fifteenth day that we are posting a prompt for Promptapalooza. In any case, this year, Belghast over at Tales of the Aggronaut has suggested a different format…we’re gonna be posting writing prompts each day to get things rolling and to see the different perspectives on various topics in gaming, pop-culture, media, and fandoms.

The prompt for today (which I’ll tackle tomorrow) from Syp over at Bio Break is:

Tell us about a person/s or thing/s that has greatly influenced you.

I’m hoping to put on my thinking cap tonight as I sleep to figure out what to say.

It’s a Wrap

I suppose today was a day of the story. I got some good story in Destiny with the Forsaken campaign and some more in 1632, so I’m feeling pretty good. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll see about a comic or a TV show, and maybe I’ll be able to find some more good stories there. I already know I have a bunch of Thor: God of Thunder I want to read and those behave been good so far, and Star Trek is always a place I go for morality tales. We’ll see how things go since I also heard there’s a new season of The Umbrella Academy to watch.
