Champions Defeats The Witcher

Champions Online has defeated The Witcher 3 in the first round of the Rambling Redshirt’s Gaming Madness in a surprising upset!

I suppose this could be considered the madness part because, in the real world, The Witcher 3 is a much better game than Champions Online. The Witcher won dozens of awards and has been considered one of the best RPG games ever produced. Champions, on the other hand, has always just been the ‘other’ superhero game after the incredible City of Heroes.

In any case, here’s the breakdown of the game…

Champions came out of the gate strong with a 26 to 22 lead in the first. While The Witcher was playing with a 93 to 72-point target lead, The Witcher rolled a 19 to Champion’s 72.

That set the stage for the match, and while The Witcher worked its way back into the game, things were already looking bad.

The second quarter saw another anemic effort by The Witcher as they rolled out a 24 when they had a target of 95. Champions only managed a 6 out of 65, but it was enough to keep the lead. And it was 47 to 44 Champions at the half.

The Witcher came out in the 3rd strong. They must have had a good pep-talk in the locker room because they almost hit the max point level. They rolled out a 94 outta 95 and scored 29 points. They took the lead 73 to 70, and things were looking good.

Then the bottom fell out. The Witcher must have wanted to get out of the tournament, or they forgot they were favored to win, but they had a possibility of rolling between 1 and 87. You’d think the probabilities were in their favor – a 3-point lead, an 87 top target compared to Champion’s 78; they should have had this in the bag.

Nope – they rolled a 3.

Champions needed a 35 or higher…just over the bell curve of their 78 possible, and they rolled a 44.

History was made – for the first time, Champions Online defeated The Witcher 3 in something.

Champions Online moves to the second round to face the winner of the Star Trek Online versus Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice battle.

Wrapping it Up

Not much to say to wrap this up, except I clearly thought The Witcher was going to win this battle.

Next up, I’ve got the kickoff of the second set of round 1 matches, the 7th seeds versus the 10th seeds. And if they’re anything like the 8s vs. 9s, this will be interesting.
