June 2018 Gaming Goals

This month I was determined to get out my goal post early so I had targets to work towards during the month. I also am gonna look at things a bit differently. Usually I focus on the games I want to play and I set goals for what level I’d like to attain or what rank I’d like to achieve. That doesn’t always seem to work. A lot of times I can put in regular play sessions and because I try to be some kind of competitionist or I run into a string of games with AFK teammates, I’m not able to attain my goals. This makes sense because these are not clear cut tasks where if I build 5 widgets I can make a whatzit. No, instead, these lagging indicators are easy to measure but harder to influence. What I want to start looking at is leading indicators…things like how many game sessions I put into a particular game. I’m thinking if I look at how many game sessions I want to put in for a particular game it would be easier for me to achieve my goal. For instance, if I set the goal to play 10 matches of SMITE over the month I know that when I complete my 6th match, I’m halfway to my goal regardless of where I stand in the rankings. Oh well, I guess I’m looking at things in this new way because I seem to keep running into issues completing my end goals of a reaching a certain level or ranking. With that in mind, here are some plans I have for June…

MMO Book Club Heads into The Secret World

Actually we’re going into Secret World Legends and I’m happy to be coming back to a game I really enjoy. One thing I’ve had issues with in this and other games is that I try to complete every quest in an area before I move on. This time around, I’m not gonna do that. I’m gonna focus on trying to complete the main story quest and enough of the side quests to ensure that I’m at a good level as I move through the game. I’d like to make sure I make progress through the story in this trip into SWL rather than do everything possible in the game. I think that’s kinda what worked for me in Neverwinter Online and it allowed me to get to max level.

So to start out playing with the MMO Book Club, I will be starting up a new character and trying to run through Kingsmouth and the Savage Coast. If I’m able to get through the storyline and out of the Savage Coast I will be very happy since that’d be the furthest I’ve ever made it in this game. So with that as my lagging goal, I would like to focus on trying to get 30 gaming sessions in for the game. Now for me, I tend to use the pomodoro method at work and a “session” is 25–30 minutes. 30 gaming sessions would be about 15 hours over the month and I’m pretty sure I can put that time in with a bit during the weekdays and on Saturday and Sunday. So there are my 2 goals…get through the storyline and out of Savage Coast and play for 30 sessions over the month.

Considering it’s the 6th of the month and I’ve already made it halfway through Kingsmouth after spending 8 sessions, I think I’m moving along pretty well.

Lord of the Rings Online

Once I reached level 12 in Bree-Land in LOTRO I actually pocketed a Stone of the Tortoise to stop my leveling. I didn’t want to out level content in the game but like I realised with SWL and Neverwinter, I think I’m gonna transition my focus from trying to complete every quest to working on the storyline and accomplishing the critical tasks and deeds needed to keep my character survivable and enjoyable. To that end, I’m gonna work on getting the deeds I need in the various starting areas so that I have a well rounded Warden. I’m pretty sure there are 2–3 virtues I want to focus on that will help me out longterm but since I don’t have the info here, I’ll have to address it next time I get into the game. To get these virtues I’m gonna try to spend 10 sessions in LOTRO this month since it’ll be a secondary game for me now that the book club has moved on.

Rift Prime

As I mentioned in my post last month, I got bogged down in this game and didn’t move too far. This month I’m looking to spend 10 sessions to move along and I’d like to make my first foray into Meridian on my Defiant. If I can get there I think I might purchase the Harbinger soul so that I can do some melee magic craft.

MOBAs – League of Legends and SMITE

In SMITE, I started learning Discordia in May and enjoyed her abilities but I need to really expand into other god types. This month I want to pick out a jungler to focus on so I can see what that experience is like. I’m thinking Arachne might be cool since she always seems to have no problem ganking me in the mid lane. I figure 10 sessions should equate to about 10 games so I can level up a jungler to at least level 2.

For League of Legends, I was so close to reaching Silver 4 and staying there but I fell back with a could of AFK teammates. No more! I’m not gonna set a rank goal this month and instead will just set a goal of 10 sessions or 10 games. That should be plenty and perhaps I’ll make it to Silver 4 after all.

Frostpunk

I also want to move forward in my single player game…Frostpunk. I had 2 different incidents where I had no internet connection this past month and the only thing I had patched up that did not require an online connection was Frostpunk. I want to play this outside of the times I have no internet. So I’m gonna try to put in 5 session to move this game forward.

Overall

So overall I have a bunch of sessions that I want to try to get in this month…75 sessions. At 25–30 minutes each that comes out to 31–38 hours during the month. Is that doable? I have no idea but I’m gonna try to track things this month and see where things end up. If I spend an hour each weekday that should come out to at least 21 hours and with 2 hours for each Saturday and Sunday, I think 38 is achievable.
