First Look Review Of Venom #1

Eddie Brock has been with Venom for a while now but how much does he really know about his symbiote? Apparently not very much as we learn in this first issue of a new series.

Rex: Part 1 By Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018.

Something has been causing the symbiote distress and he’s even been having nightmares of a time before he bonded with Eddie, as in going all the way back to Beowulf times, and Venom is scared. But scared or not, there are innocents to protect so the duo head out to confront Jack O’Lantern and his crew.

We soon learn that Brock isn’t getting into the fray with these bad guys, rather, he’s taking snapshots in hopes he can earn a little dough. Times have been rough on our anti-hero and not just financially. Eddie’s been finding it more and more difficult to control his ‘other’ and the anti-psychotics he takes aren’t helping as much as they used to. And as Jack breaks free of the police and shoots one, Venom becomes unhinged. Eddie can’t control him and he develops a strange symbol on his forehead and starts yelling in an alien tongue. Just as it looks like it’s too late to save the officers, someone shoots Venom and a huge explosion stuns everyone.
Coming too, Eddie is face to face with Rex Strickland who claims to have been bonded to a symbiote long before Eddie ever dreamed of Venom. And he needs Eddie’s help. It seems there was a super-soldier program that joined symbiotes with people and sent them around the world as the government’s own little super-squad. The thing is, Rex got tired of the killing and got out while his buddies are still bonded and he’s looking to help them out before the government “disposes” of them.

The action picks up as Brock tries to help out Rex and his buddies. But things get a bit crazy as Venom is challenged by multiple symbiotes screaming in the alien language and then some kind of flying creature shows up. As Eddie tries to deal with the many vectors of attack, his symbiote wigs out again and things take a turn for the worse.

The situation does not look good for our hero but it sure makes for an interesting story. I’m definitely looking forward too the second issue and am dying to learn more about the symbiotes since Venom has always been one of my favorite characters in the Marvel Universe.

I give this issue a First Look Rating of a B+.
