The Naming of a Summoner

Of course, the tutorial is the basic starting point of a new game, but I found picking a name to be a bit of a struggle as well.

A New Summoner

While there is no character creation in League of Legends as there is in MMOs and such, there is one thing that can cause a headache when starting up a new character. With over 100 million players, myself included with 2 accounts, I ran into a problem trying to figure out a name for my new summoner.

After going through a few dozen names and being told they were all unavailable, I was worried I’d not have a name by the time I finished my game session.

Fortunately, fate stepped in and assigned me a name…TannhauserTravel. I was trying to see if I could fit in the whole TannhauserTraveller name but was unable to and inadvertently hit ENTER. Oh well, it’s as good a summoner name as any.

Into the Tutorial

The tutorial is broken down into parts, and since it took so long for me to get a valid summoner name, I wasn’t sure how far I would get.

I’ve had similar situations in the past where it takes so long to create a character that I don’t have any time to actually play. I’ve seen some games that let you jump in and get a quick start with action and a bit of story to wet your appetite before you spend the time selecting your character look or class or any of that. I actually enjoy that style of introduction a lot better. I mean why should I care what my character looks like if I can’t get the name that fits my look or if I end up disliking the class I picked out for the laser eye face modification, or even better, why should I care if I have a face tattoo when I’m always gonna be wearing a helmet?

Anyway, I got my name which is about all the customization someone gets when starting to play League of Legends.

Then it was on to the tutorial where I got to learn how to hit the right mouse button to move.

Oops…ran out of time to make progress and I’ll have to get into the tutorial and learn how to move another time.

It’s A Wrap

So, what did I learn today…it’s not easy to pick a name for a new character and even if there is no character customization starting a new game can take a lot of time. I suppose I could also say that I should expect that the first thing a tutorial does is to teach a user how to move in the environment. This is a good thing and seems by all consensus to be the fundamental building block for teaching a player how to play a game.

Finally, I’ll say that having a couple dozen options for a character name may be useful when jumping in to a new game because you most likely will have difficulty getting your first pick.
